Tampa Bay Times - - Remembering | Tampa Bay -

It’s not every day you see a helicopter land on the highway.

But that’s what happened Sunday when authorities responded to a seriously injured car crash victim near mile marker 193 on southbound Interstate 75.

The driver of a Nissan left the highway and crashed into a tree just southeast of Venice, said Lt. Gregory S. Bueno, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman. Authorities briefly shut down southbound I-75 traffic for a brief time around noon so a helicopter could land, load the injured motorist and transport him to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The driver, who authorities haven’t identified, suffered serious injuries in the crash, Bueno said.

The accident remains under investigation.
