SHARON ESHELMAN

Grand Prize Winner

Taste of Home - - Contest -

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PUT THIS TWIST ON BAKLAVA?

I like the flavor of traditional baklava but not the extreme sweetness. I thought of the topping on a peach cobbler that my sister-in-law made, and I wondered if I could make a cookie that I could add honey, walnuts and cinnamon to. This is the result.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO COOK FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

I love making the traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Fruit and nut stuffing and fresh cranberry relish are holiday musts, as well as pumpkin pie made with a touch of molasses.

HAVE YOU WON A COOKING CONTEST BEFORE?

I won first prize in a chili cook-off and the grand prize for my New England seafood chowder at my church. A friend has won several baking contests, and after tasting my Baklava Thumbprint Cookies, she encouraged me to submit the recipe to this contest.

WHAT COOKING TIPS CAN YOU SHARE WITH OUR READERS?

Enjoy the process of cooking and baking. Don’t become frustrated if something doesn’t come out the way you thought it would. I’m more comfortable in my sewing room than baking things in the kitchen, but variety is the spice of life, so reach out and do something new. You may be surprised, as winning this contest surprised me.
