JAY HYATT SPRAGUE

1938-2023

Jay Hyatt Sprague, born Feb. 10, 1938 in Jersey Shore, Penn., passed away in his sleep at home in Tehachapi, Calif., on Dec. 15, 2023.

In 1955, along with his father and mother “Red” and

Goldie Sprague, Jay left his hometown of Jersey Shore to land in Anaheim, Calif. While employed as a security guard at the Bellflower Roller Arena, Jay met his future wife, Sylvia, after she and another young lady collided on the rink. Jay picked Sylvia up off the floor first. On March 14, 1959, the two began their 64-year journey

together in marriage in Artesia, Calif.

One unparticular evening, Jay turned to Sylvia and stated he wanted to move the family. Jay, seeing that the city was growing big around them, wanted his children to grow up with earth under their feet. In 1965, Jay moved his family to the small town of California City where they opened a hardware store. Seeing there was not enough population to keep the hardware store afloat, he found employment with Cal-City Concrete.

Jay was very active in the California City community. He helped with the Community Club, was a member of the volunteer fire department where he became the chief, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and the president of

California City Economic Development Committee. Jay’s involvement didn’t end there. For a period of time, Jay sat as an elected official on the California City — City Council, where he became the vice mayor. Jay was also an active member of the California City Community Players. Without Jay and his vision, “The Sprague Building,” which was built entirely by volunteers and with donated materials in 72 hours, would not be a reality. This community center still bears monument to his name.

Jay Sprague is survived by his wife, Sylvia; son,

Shawn Jay Sprague, and daughter, Shelly Jo Sprague (Werenth). Grandchildren, Jarred C. Vermillion, Justine Jo Vermillion, Hyatt Reese Sprague, Brittany Sprague Puima, Dalton James Sprague, and Taylor Alan Moore. Great-frandchildren Jarred C. Vermillion Jr., Annabella Vermilion, Addilynn Vermillion, Bly Logan Sprague, Dakota Rea Sprague, Oden Arthur Shaw, Poppy Jean Puima, and Hudson Reese Sprague.
