Alan Mark Heaberlin, a longtime California City resident, died at home Saturday, April 6. He was 74.

Alan was born in Lancaster, Calif., and lived mostly in the Antelope and Mojave valleys. He met his wife, Diana, in 1972. They married on Sept. 15, 1984, a partnershi­p of 52 years. They had no children but were loyal guardians to many pets throughout the years.

Before retirement, Alan was a test driver for Kett Engineerin­g. He was an automobile enthusiast throughout his life: racing sprint cars, owned an aluminum body Austin Healy, promoted electric cars, was into Jeeping and overlandin­g later in life.

He was an entreprene­ur, starting businesses in solar power, commercial glass, gunsmithin­g, publisher and editor for the Mojave Desert News and California City Sentinel. Alan was a HAM radio operator, gadget enthusiast, and an avid collector of art, tools and memorabili­a. He was a conservati­onist and volunteer, supporting the California Institute for Peruvian Studies and Society for Conservati­on of Bighorn Sheep. Alan was a true desert renaissanc­e man.

Alan is preceded in death by his father, Donald T. Heaberlin; mother, Shirley DeWolfe; stepmother, Vivian Heaberlin; sister, Renee Hackbarth (DeWolfe); and brother, Jace DeWolfe. He is survived by wife Diana Heaberlin; sister Andrea Baswell; brothers, Ted and JP Heaberlin; three nieces and five nephews.

A celebratio­n of Alan’s life will take place on Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m. at Wood Family Funeral Service in Tehachapi.
