Greyhounds rally to advance in NCAA Tournament

Assumption 4, St. Anselm 3: Abigail Larson scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh as the No. 4 Greyhounds (24-14), which gave up a 3-run homer in the first, scored four unanswered to beat the No. 5 Hawks (25-23) on the first day of the NCAA Tournament in Wilmington, Del.

Kaitlyn Cahill singled in Lauren Geremia to tie the game in the sixth, while Raigan Gregoire and Cahill scored in the second.

Kaelin Waldron came in relief for Assumption and limited St. Anselm to four hits over 62⁄3 innings to pick up her fourth win of the season.

Worcester State 7, Fitchburg State 0: The third-seeded Lancers scored six runs in the bottom of the third and defeated the No. 6 Falcons in the first round of the MASCAC Tournament.

Emma Lapoint kickstarte­d the run with a 2-run double and crossed on a passed ball. Bella Gasbarro and Morgan Keefe each doubled in runs and Cali Brouillard capped the inning with an RBI-single. Brouillard also added a run in the sixth.

Emily Bartlett allowed one hit and six strike outs in a complete game shutout.

Baseball

New Haven 4, Assumption 0; Assumption 7, Pace 4: Jack Barry belted a grand slam in the top of the fifth as the Greyhounds rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Settlers to save off eliminatio­n in the Northeast-10 Tournament at Franklin Pierce.

Owen Podolec and Sean Moynihan also homered for Assumption, and Cody Smith scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.

After a dominating 23-run performanc­e over top-seeded Southern New Hampshire in the opening day of the tournament on Wednesday, the Greyhounds couldn’t plate a run against the Chargers in the first game on Thursday and slipped into the losers bracket.

Worcester State 3, Framingham State 1; Bridgewate­r State 16, Worcester State 7: Ryan Jewett laid down a bunt in the top of the fifth, plating Kevin Doyle to boost the No. 6 Lancers (10-26) past the No. 3 Rams (16-18) in the first round of the MASCAC Tournament.

Tom Halliwell doubled in Nathan Thurber in the fourth and drew a walk in the ninth, scoring Frankie Hernandez. Worcester State’s Ben Smith fanned 13 and moved his record to 4-4.

The Lancers were bumped down to the losers bracket by host Bridgewate­r State, which scored the final eight runs.
