- Telegram & Gazette

After more than 1,200 votes were cast, Joonho Kim of St. Paul Diocesan Junior-Senior High School emerged as the Telegram & Gazette Student of the Week.

The senior at the Worcester private school was one of four nominees. He captured 50% of the 1,211 total votes.

The T&G asked high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors to nominate students they say have shown outstanding school achievement and community service.

Joonho was nominated by Principal Sandra Pollette. She cited his achievements in the recent Catholic Math League competition, where he earned Advanced Math National Champion.

She wrote of Joonho: "He challenges himself each year by taking Honors and AP courses whenever possible. Over his high school career, he has never received a grade below an A. He's on the Student Council, serves as a class officer and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Math Team. He plays the clarinet in the school's concert band."

Others nominated this week:

Sara V. Moreira Araujo, Burncoat High School: Sara, a junior, exemplifies remarkable resilience and empathy as an immigrant from Brazil, overcoming challenges to thrive academically and personally. Her support for fellow immigrant students, drawn from her own experiences, exhibits her compassion and dedication to assisting others facing similar obstacles.

Madison Ethier, David Prouty High School, Spencer: Maddy, a senior, radiates a positive energy and is always asking inquisitive questions during class time. She has established a leading role in the school community. She excels in Honors and AP coursework. She's involved in varsity sports such as soccer and basketball and puts the same effort into her team sports as she does her academics. One of her most meaningful roles has been serving as a coach for the Girls on the Run program.

Ellie R'Com, Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public

School: Ellie, a freshman, has many aspirations, one of which is to make a positive and lasting impact on her Worcester community through continued service and study. Ellie excels in all areas of her rigorous academic program of study and is a widely respected member of her school community. In addition, she is very active in the wider community, volunteering her time in service to others. Humble and generous, Ellie would never seek additional attention, but she is so deserving of this recognition.
