Lifeshare is calling for blood donors

-

LifeShare Blood Center needs blood donors.

The area’s blood supply continues at a minimum due to the recent decrease in blood donors, particularly during the holidays.

“The holidays, inclement weather and prevalence of the flu seem to be the main contributors to the decrease in blood donations this year. We are in need of 500 additional blood donations to replenish the supply. This is important for each community not just to have enough blood to get through the day, but to have enough in case demand goes up or donations drop even further. For example, a trauma accident could create a sudden additional demand or inclement weather could suddenly halt donations. It’s all about the community participating in their own preparedness, as well as taking care of everyday medical needs,” says Tina Hooper, spokeswoman for LifeShare Blood Centers.

Hospitals must have blood on hand and ready to transfuse for patients in critical need. Accident victims, surgery patients and persons with blood disorders are a few examples of the people that receive a life-saving benefit from the blood. All types are needed, and those who do not know their blood type are welcome. It takes 24 hours or more for the blood to be available for use after it is donated.

People can give blood at LifeShare Blood Center on College Drive or any mobile blood drive. Appointments are not mandatory but are welcome. For more information, call 903-794-3173 or visit lifeshare.org.
