PG’S Harp will play for Cisco

- —Josh Richert

Ty Harp, a senior transfer with Pleasant Grove, recently signed a national letter of intent to play baseball and start his collegiate academic career with Cisco College in Cisco, Texas.

Harp was a three-year starter with Wills Point prior to his family moving to Texarkana last summer. During his junior year, the right-handed shortstop/pitcher batted .435 with 33 RBIs, nine doubles and scored 24 runs.

Since joining the Hawks, Harp has stood out to the PG coaching staff.

“I have had Ty in the whole offseason and about eight baseball practices, and during that time he has gained respect from his peers and other players,” Hawks veteran coach Craig Jones said. “He’s actually one of our leaders, which is impressive to come in and take on that role and be accepted before ever suiting up for us.”

Jones sees Harp’s work ethic as one of his strong suits.

“He’s the son of a principal, and so he has structure and discipline,” the coach said. “Those are good traits to have; they will serve him well.”

Last season the Wranglers garnered a 48-13 record and finished fourth in the nation among NJCAA baseball programs.

“The coaches were upfront and honest with me from the beginning, and that matters a lot to me,” Harp said about his decision to sign with Cisco. “They have a good winning tradition and success of developing middle infielders. I wanted to go somewhere that I could continue to get better and also have a chance to win.”

Harp plans to major in sports management and minor in communications. He also said that Pleasant Grove and Jones and his staff will prepare him for the next level.

The Hawks have won five consecutive Region II-3A titles and two of the last three state championships, including last year’s title.

“Being my senior year, we have the goal to win district and go win another state title,” Harp said. “We’ve worked hard already and will continue to work hard to achieve those goals. This is high-level baseball.”

Ty is the son of Tammie and Tom Harp.
