Henderson State board OKs bond for new on-campus housing
ARKADELPHIA, Ark.— Henderson State University Board of Trustees approved a $33 million bond issue Thursday to build two new, modern residential buildings on campus and purchase an existing apartment complex.
Plans call for the construction of a 300-bed residence hall and a 240-bed apartment-style complex and the purchase of Whispering Oaks apartment complex with a capacity of 288 tenants.
“We greatly appreciate our Board of Trustees’ authorization to move forward with this significant bond issue,” HSU President Glen Jones said. “Consistent with our studentsfirst philosophy, the construction of contemporary residential facilities will create a unique opportunity to provide outstanding living and learning communities for our students, today and in the future.”
Bobby Jones, vice president for finance and administration, said the next step will be the preparation of an economic feasibility study to submit to the Higher Education Coordinating Board for approval. As bonds are sold, the university will select an architect to prepare the plans for the new facilities. Selection of a contractor will follow.
“We hope to start construction quickly so we can have the new buildings ready to occupy by fall 2015,” Jones said.
Henderson State currently has six residence halls on campus that can house more than 1,300.
