PG girls lose to Hugo

- By Phil Sandoval

The Hugo, Okla., Lady Buffaloes entered Pleasant Grove's Hawk Gym as unknowns. But it didn't take long for the Lady Hawks to find out their out-of-state visitors were a formidable opponent.

After spending most of the first quarter figuring out what Pleasant Grove was all about on the basketball court, Hugo put what they learned into practice and sped away with a 65-54 win.

The style of game played by the Lady Buffs Shaniqua Patterson, for the most part, was vexing to PG. The slim forward led all scorers with 24 points, 16 of which in the first half, where a Thompson field gave her team a 14-13 lead with 1:30 left in the first quarter.

Before the shot, it was the last time Hugo trailed.

A much-needed bucket from the Hawks' Kelsey Kempson forced a 20-all tie at the seven-minute mark of the second quarter.

Hugo erased the deadlock on its next possession and kept on scoring.

In just over five minutes, the Buffs outscored PG, 16-5 to go up by 12 at halftime.

Hugo was 10-of-14 from the floor in the period. In response, Pleasant Grove was held to four field goals in 10 attempts.

The Hawks made enough adjustments to match Hugo throughout the second half. But, because of the events in the second quarter, the damage was done.

PG used a 7-0 run in the third quarter to chop the Buffs' lead to six. Kempson, Brette Wacha and Hayley Harp contributed a bucket each in the spurt.

Hugo repelled the challenge with a 5-0 finishing kick to move its lead back to 13 entering the fourth quarter.

PG earned itself a small reward when it outscored the Buffs, 17-16, in the final quarter.
