Host James Bowie squads both win in opening round

SIMMS, Texas—At times, the shooting abilities of teams throughout Day 1 of the James Bowie tournament mirrored the weather—both were fridged.

Despite the chilly conditions which kept the scores down, host James Bowie emerged as the big winner from Thursday's action.

The Pirate boys and girls teams both advanced to today's championsh­ip semi-finals after posting commanding first-round wins.

The boys drilled LindenKild­are's jayvees, 48-20, and the Lady Pirates routed Union Hill, 42-17.

The tournament resumes with a9 a.m. girls eliminatio­n game between McLeod and Maud. The rest of the girls schedule includes the noon, Chapel Hill JV–Union Hill eliminator followed by the two semifinals.

At 3 p.m., Redwater squares off with Hooks. The other semi pits James Bowie against Avinger at 6 p.m.

Redwater advanced with a 4935 victory over McLeod. Hooks topped Maud, 35-28, Avinger earned a forfeit win over Chapel Hill, which had a time conflict.

The boys consolatio­n games are at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The early game pits McLeod against Maud. The afternoon matinee features Redwater and LindenKild­are's JV.

The championsh­ip semifinals involve DeKalb and Linden- Kildare in the 4:30 p.m. contest. The second semifinal matches James Bowie and Avinger; that contest tips off at 7:30 p.m.

DeKalb defeated McLeod, 3226 to advance; Linden-Kildare topped Maud, 52-45; and the Indians beat Redwater, 66-45, in Thursday's late game.

Boys Dekalb 32, Mcleod 26

Gunter Baxley scored seven of his 13 points for DeKalb before fouling out in a 16-7 fourth quarter where McKalb overcame a threepoint deficit to the Longhorns entering the period. Shantron Brown helped the offense with nine points.

Free throws played a key role in the outcome. McLeod shot a meager 4-for-19 from the line. DeKalb wasn't much better, but, managed to sink 7 of 18 attempts.

Prior to the late scoring burst McLeod took a 19-16 lead in the third quarter on a pair of Jackson Baker field goals. Baker scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the second half for the Longhorns, which fall to the eliminatio­n bracket on the loss.

linden-Kildare 52, Maud 45

Cardale Peterson netted eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help Linden-Kildare to a relatively easy win over Maud which got within five points of the Tigers before missing their last three field goal tries in the final 1:05.

L-K got additional support from Tedred Linwood, who scored 14 points and 11 from Jordan Craver.

Maud was led by Kyran Richardson with 12 points and Kendall Mathis had 10.

James bowie 48, linden-Kildare JV 20

From a competitio­n standpoint the game devolved rapidly from the open tip to the final buzzer. The seasoned Pirates put the young Tigers in a 19-7 first period hole, then continued to apply a vice-like grip on defense, holding L-K to single figures in all four quarters while yielding six total field goals.

The Pirates Jim Lawing scored eight of his team high 10 points in the first quarter. Colton May contribute­d nine and Ryan Hannah poured in eight points.

Avinger 66, redwater 45

Playing catch-up against Avinger is a tough task. Redwater discovered that fact in a loss that sent the Dragons to the eliminatio­n bracket.

Jeremiaha Clark canned seven first quarter points to help lift the Indians to a early 16-5 lead. And Clark continued to make things happen in the next quarter by netting six more. He finished with 23 and teammate Lake Loyd drained six, 3-pointers for the majority of his 21 points.

Avinger, meanwhile, cooled off in the following eight minutes, but still manage to outscore Redwater by a duece to take a 3523 cushion into the break.

The Indians concluded the game with a 21-13 run after both teams matched each other with 10 points in the third quarter.

Dillon Hooker had 20 points for Redwater.

girls redwater 49, Mcleod 35

A balanced scoring attack allowed Redwater to open a 1911, first quarter lead where the Lady Dragons never trailed. Kelli Francis, Courtney Pedron and Brooke Thompson contribute­d five points each in the run.

Redwater was outscored once—in the second quarter— where McLeod scored 11 points to the Lady Dragons nine.

Redwater used three, 3-pointers from Katy Worrell in the third and seven points by Lexi Bonner in the final eight minutes to fashion a 23-13 run in the second half that sealed the win.

Worrell ended with 12, all on 3-pointers. Jessica Keener had 14 for McLeod.

Hooks 35, Maud 28

Kaylee Price and Haley Price accounted for 28 of the Lady Hornets 35 points in a defensive showdown. Down by one entering the second quarter, Hooks, which was held to single digits until the fourth quarter, eked out a 15-12 halftime lead.

Bre Montgomery and Nikki Miller netted six each for Maud.

James bowie 42, Union Hill 17

After going scoreless in the opening four minutes, James Bowie found its shooting eye long enough to take a sevenpoint lead at the end of the first quarter and never be challenged afterwards.

Katlynn Crabtree sank a pair of free throws to put the Lady Pirates on the scoreboard. Then Reagan Williams took over the scoring chores and fired in six quick points.

Williams led all scorers with 16 points. Kylee Minter tossed in eight and Crabtree finished with six

After building a 10-3 lead James Bowie shifted its attention to defense.

For the remainder of the first half, the host team forced Union Hill into making numerous turnovers where James Bowie feasted.

Taking advantage of the caused by the miscues, the Lady Pirates sank a bunch of inside shots to increase the gap to 22-7 at halftime.

James Bowie held the Lady Pirates to six field goals while putting in 17.
