PITCHER PERFECT

Pleasant Grove’s Jeans Pitcher of Year

- By Josh Richert Assistant Sports Editor

Trey Jeans isn’t one for talking. He is much more of a performer.

Jeans’ performances on the diamond for Pleasant Grove during the last two seasons gained attention from many collegiate scouts, and he will be joining the University of Louisiana-Lafayette pitching staff in the fall.

Jeans was 8-3 on the mound as a senior for the Hawks, including a perfect 4-0 record in the playoffs, and the left-hander has been selected as the Gazette’s 2014 Pitcher of the Year.

“Trey was a lot more comfortable and confident this year,” Hawks coach Craig Jones said. “He threw more strikes and got ahead of batters consistently, and so he was able to throw his strikeout pitch more often.”

Jeans, who was 7-4 as a junior for PG, worked 76 innings as a senior. He started 13 games, throwing eight complete outings. He allowed 43 hits and 30 runs—18 earned—for a 1.66 ERA. Jeans struck out 112 and walked 37.

In the playoffs, Jeans started all four games he won, throwing two complete games. He had 23 innings pitched, 37 strikeouts, and 13 walks. He allowed 15 hits

and six runs—four earned—for a 1.22 ERA.

Jeans also played right field and hit in the No. 3-hole for Pleasant Grove, which reached the Region II-3A semifinals before losing to state finalist Argyle.

“Trey is a quiet leader; he leads by example,” Jones said. “He can get pumped up when he needs to be but stays controlled. What makes him so unique as one of our pitchers, is that he gave us quality starts all year but also was among our leading hitters. He’s really a complete player.”
