Sissons Strives
An unlikely leader emerged on New Boston’s baseball team in the 2013-14 season.
Philp i Sissons, a quiet, humble freshman, rose to the occasion and helped lead the Lions to the regional quarterfinals in the 2A state playoffs. Sissons’
breakout season has earned him Texarkana Gazette Newcomer of the Year honors.
After starting the season as a designated hitter, Sissons was flexed into several different positions, and New Boston head coach Gary Miller quickly noticed that he was productive at each one. His season stats included a 6-2 pitching record with 45 strikeouts and a 1.99 ERA, a .299 batting average, 21 runs scored and 14 RBI.
“Philip progressed so quickly and did well at every spot,” Miller said. “He put pressure on himself to be perfect in the beginning, but he really did well once he relaxed. The older players really supported him and welcomed anyone that was going to help them win games.
“Philip rarely says a word; he just gets out there and handles his business. Character is his one of his biggest qualities. He’s a great student and was raised very well. He’s just a quality guy.”
Sissons is a versatile player that plays first base, third base, catcher and can get some wins on the mound. He’s also on the varsity football team, which Miller thinks will help develop him into an even better baseball player.
“He’ll likely be our No. 1 pitcher next season,” Miller said. “He’ll do some catching and could play some third base. It’s good on a coach to have a player that’s flexible. He’s very smart, coachable and can play anywhere.
“He’s got a shot at being the starting quarterback, too. I think that will help him deal with pressure during baseball because he’ll be right in the middle of it during football season.”
Sissons’ career has gotten off to a solid start and all of the New Boston faithful should be excited about having him back for three more years.
“You wish you had five or six guys like Sissons,” Miller said. “We’re fortunate to have him, and the kids look up to him already. He’s a positive role model and really sets an example with his work ethic.”
