On the Wings of Angels

-

Do you believe in angels? I believe there are angels living among us here in Texarkana! These aren’t the beings spoken of in the Bible, but they are living out God’s message of service and love to give hope to those battling cancer in our area. The Angel Fund Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps individuals and families who are going through hardships in the midst of one of the worst diagnoses a person can receive: the dreaded “C” word. Through fundraisers, donations and an annual garage sale, which is scheduled for June 5th and 6th this year, the foundation raises money to help meet the needs of cancer patients whose savings have been depleted and those who have no or little insurance coverage. Funds are given directly to the service provider(s) where the bill is owed.

The Angel Fund Foundation was started in 2006 by Beth Morgan and her family. After her battle with cancer, Beth felt The Lord leading her to give back to those she saw in need around her. The First Presbyterian Church downtown provides the office and storage space for the donated items. Mrs. Morgan emphasized how “mission minded” the church is and her sincere gratitude for all they do for the community. The foundation has no paid staff. Everyone involved is a board member and/or volunteer. Approximately two-thirds of the board are cancer survivors, so they understand the needs of those suffering with this terrible diagnosis. As of April 2015, the Angel Fund Foundation has helped an astonishing 145 patients in the Texarkana area, totaling over $167,880.

The 5th Annual “ULTIMATE” Community Garage Sale, one of the foundation’s fundraisers, will be held Friday, June 5th and Saturday, June 6th at the corner of 6th and Hickory Streets in Texarkana, Arkansas. “It will be even larger than last year,” Mrs. Morgan stated. Tons of quality items, including furniture, will be for sale. 100% of all proceeds go to help cancer patients! Last year’s garage sale raised $8,000 for patients in our area.

After the sale each year, many of the remaining items are donated to individuals and churches, while some are put back in storage for the next year’s sale. The Garage Sale Committee, lead by Fran Mitchell, meets every Tuesday from 10-12 to help collect, sort and price items. While the Annual Garage Sale brings in a lot of money for the Angel Fund Foundation, the majority of funds come from private donations and grants from the Texarkana Area Community Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Texarkana Foundation.

Don’t miss the opportunity to find some great deals while supporting a worthy cause! Come out to the Angel Fund Foundation Ultimate Community Garage Sale on June 5th and 6th and help give back to those who are fighting for their lives.
