Pewitt coasts past DeKalb
OMAHA-NAPLES, Texas—Paul Pewitt delighted its Homecoming game fans with a convincing 37-18 victory over DeKalb at Brahma Stadium on Friday night in a District 7-3A, D-II game.
Lamon Hillis led the Brahmas with 177 yards on just 9 carries and three touchdowns. He had touchdown runs of 70 and 48 yards, plus a 50-yard interception return. Paul Pewitt had 302 rushing yards.
The Brahmas’ defense came up with three interceptions during the contest.
JaQuan Jackson paced the Bears with 112 yards on 11 carries for two touchdowns. Paul Pewitt got the Brahmas off and running with a 70-yard touchdown on the Brahmas’ second possession. DeKalb appeared to have Hillis stopped for a short gain, but he broke loose from a couple of tackles and outran the Bears’ defenders. Tyshun Mitchell ran for a 2-point conversion.
Paul Pewitt scored again midway in the second period, marching 68 yards in eight plays. A 19-yard pass from Tyran Betts to Montana Bockman to the Bears’ 12 yard line set up LaBrandon Webster’s 12-yard run for a 14-0 lead.
The Brahmas quickly scored again when Hillis intercepted a pass at midfield and ran it in for the score, for a 22-0 advantage.
DeKalb scored in the final two minutes of the first half on a 13-yard run by Jackson, who also set up the score with a 27-yard run. Paul Pewitt increased its lead to 30-6 on Hillis’ 48-yard run with 4:15 left in the third
quarter.
Jackson pulled the Bears within 30-12 with a 6-yard run one minute later.
The final Paul Pewitt touchdown came on a 30-yard interception by Lucas Hungerford with 5:31 left in the contest.
D.J. Gray closed out the scoring for DeKalb with a 10-yard run with 31 seconds left in the game.
