McLeod tourney brings area teams to b-ball victory, defeat

MCLEOD, Texas—Host McLeod, Atlanta, Avery, and Queen City each won two games Thursday in the boys McLeod Tournament.

Queen City defeated Maud, 58-27, and Saltillo, 65-57, while Avery defeated Saltillo, 34-28, and Maud, 46-44, in overtime. Queen City and Avery will meet at 9 a.m. today with the winner being the No. 1 seed from Pool B.

McLeod downed DeKalb, 54-34, and Bloomburg, 43-33, while Atlanta walloped Bloomburg, 66-21. and DeKalb, 65-37. McLeod and Atlanta will play at 1:30 p.m. to claim the No. 1 seed from Pool A.

In other games today, Bloomburg plays DeKalb at 10:30, and Saltillo plays Maud at noon.

After the Pool games, bracket play will begin at 3 p.m.

The championsh­ip game will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

QUEEN CITY 58, MAUD 27

The Bulldogs raced out to a 20-6 first-quarter lead and continued to pull away.

Ten players scored for Queen City with Dexter Burrow, Tyler Adcock, and Tyler Nolan leading the way with nine points each. Cade Prince and Jonathon Mitchell had seven each for Maud.

ATLANTA 66, BLOOMBURG 21

Atlanta held an 18-7 first-quarter advantage and stretched its lead to 36-12 at halftime.

Desmond Robinson led the Rabbs with 15 points with Curtis Smith adding 13 and Quenton Rowe 11.

Brett Crumpler and Jordan Clayton had six each for Bloomburg.

AVERY 34, SALTILLO 28

Avery outscored the Lions, 19-7, in the middle two periods and held on for the win.

M. Kelsoe led Avery with 11 points, while Michael Simmons and Lyle Bench had seven each for the Lions.

MCLEOD 54, DEKALB 34

The duo of Colby Smith (22) and JR Smith (17) outscored the Bears' team.

The Longhorns held a 35-15 advantage during the middle periods.

T. Jamison paced DeKalb with 17 points.

AVERY 46, MAUD 44 (OVERTIME)

The game was close all the way with the score tied, 41-41, at end of regulation.

Maud had chance to win in regulation, but missed five straight free throws in final two minutes.

Matt Jackson paced the Bulldogs with 18 points and Mitchell led Maud with 12.

QUEEN CITY 65, SALTILLO 57

After Queen City scored 58 points and Saltillo only 28 in an earlier game, it seemed Queen City would dominate.

But Saltillo held a 32-24 lead at halftime before Queen City pulled within, 44-43, at end of third quarter.

The Bulldogs continued their comeback with a big fourth quarter, outscoring the Lions, 22-13.

Eleven players scored for Queen City with Dylan Scott leading the way four, 3-point shots for 12 points, and Colton Davis had 10.

Logan Camp and Ryan Prewett had 10 each for the Lions.
