Two games stand out in Redwater’s Invitation­al basketball tournament

REDWATER, Texas—Very few battles broke out on the first day of the Redwater Invitation­al basketball tournament Thursday.

There were only two games that were competitiv­e. Redwater boys defeated James Bowie 36-29, and Fouke sneaked by Hooks' boys, 65-63, in the most fierce game of the day.

First round girls winners were Taylor, Redwater, Fouke and Paul Pewitt.

On the boys' side, Redwater, Fouke and Taylor clinched wins.

Today's boys games begin with Hooks facing Linden-Kildare in the new gym at 3 p.m. Redwater plays Taylor at 6 in the new gym, and Linden-Kildare clashes with Fouke at 7:30 in the old gym.

In the girls' championsh­ip bracket, Fouke

takes on Paul Pewitt at 4:30 in the new gym, and Taylor tips off against Redwater at 7:30 in the new gym.

In the girls' consolatio­n bracket, Hooks plays Avery at 4:30 in the old gym, and Linden-Kildare hoops it up with James Bowie at 6 in the old gym.

GIRLS PAUL PEWITT 41, AVERY 30

Ebbony Cobbins swished in a gamehigh 18 points to propel the Lady Brahmas over the Lady Bulldogs.

Paul Pewitt built a 24-16 halftime lead and never trailed.

Jill Whitney poured in 14 points for Avery.

FOUKE 66, HOOKS 42

The third quarter proved costly for the Lady Hornets.

Hooks saw a 28-27 halftime lead slip away as the Lady Panthers outscored them 20-4 in the third.

Hannah Mauldin lit up the scoreboard with a game-high 23 points for Fouke. Teammate Crysta Larey popped in 16 points. Laykin Smallwood added 11 for the Panthers.

Korey Brooks paced the Hornets with 13.

TAYLOR 51, LINDEN-KILDARE 28

After Linden-Kildare took a 6-3 lead after one quarter, Taylor scored 19 points in the second and third quarters to defeat Linden-Kildare.

Jasmyn Copeland hooped in 11 points for Taylor. Teammates PresHie Morgan and Blair McMahen helped out with 10 points each for Taylor.

Skylar Vaughn had a game-high 12 points for Linden-Kildare.

REDWATER 48, JAMES BOWIE 26

Karli Boatright hit three shots from downtown and finished with 11 points as the Lady Dragons rolled past the Lady Pirates.

Haley Latham contribute­d 10 for

Redwater.

Ravyn Hillis and Ashley Shaw had five points each for James Bowie.

BOYS REDWATER 36, JAMES BOWIE 29

Conner McKellar shot in seven points to lead the Dragons over the Pirates.

Cody Roberson and Evan Barron scored seven each for James Bowie.

After the Pirates took a seven point lead after the first, Redwater outscored James Bowie 14-2 in the second.

The Dragons held the lead the rest of the way.

FOUKE 65, HOOKS 63, OT

In the best game of the day, Fouke edged Hooks in overtime. Fouke's Landon Gonzales, who finished with 24 points, hit a game-tying 3-pointer with seconds left to force the extra four-minute quarter.

Connor Price led all scorers with 27 for the Hornets.

Bailey Searcy swished in 13 for the Panthers, while Jonah Parker added 12.

Hooks' Marc Reiter helped out with 11.

TAYLOR 49, JAMES BOWIE 28

Droux Staten poured in 13 points to lead the Tigers over the Pirates.

Cody Roberson had a game-high 15 points for James Bowie.

The Pirates tried to get on track but were plagued by turnovers.
