Leopards beat Genoa Central

Liberty-Eylau’s fast start too much for Dragons

- By Brian Tyl

On a warm day, Liberty-Eylau iced it early.

The Leopards put up five runs in the first two frames and got great pitching from Garrett Brooks who threw a three-hitter, struck out two, walked one and hit two batsmen as Liberty-Eylau defeated Genoa Central 5-1 on Leopard Field at H.E. Markham Park Saturday.

“I feel like Garrett came out and made pitches when something went Genoa Central’s way,” Leopard head coach Zach Fowler said. “When your guy is good on the mound, it will cover up a lot of stuff that the team messes up on. I will take a performance like that from him every single time.”

Cutter Webb singled and stole second in the first inning with one out for L-E. Teammate Tristan Brooks slapped an RBI double to left center to give the Leopards an early 1-0 lead.

“I thought we came out flat today,” Genoa Central head coach TJ Cox said.

“Their pitcher did well all day and kept us off balance. He came out and filled up the outside corner, and we never adjusted to it.”

Liberty-Eylau scored all the runs it would need in the second frame. Ethan Brooks reached first on a single down the third-base line with one out. Rory Baugus reached on an error as Ethan Brooks advanced to second.

Bryan Moore laced in a single to center field to load the bases, and the Leopards’ Jacoby Ross clubbed a 2-run single to right field. Webb was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Tristan Brooks got an RBI when he was plunked with the baseball to make it 5-1.

Ethan Brooks went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles for L-E, while his brother, Tristan, had a double and 2 RBI.

Garrett Cook led off the sixth with a single to left and stole second for the Dragons. Cook advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield error. Cook knocked two singles for Genoa Central.

Liberty-Eylau hosts Atlanta at 7 p.m. Friday in its district opener.
