HONORS
Bethany Tatum of De Queen, Ark., was recently inducted into Harding University’s chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society. Tatum, social work major, was welcomed into the prestigious society along with another 80 students during a ceremony on March 19.
Alpha Chi is a nationally acclaimed honor society designed to commend academic excellence in universities across the nation. Harding’s chapter, called the Arkansas Eta chapter, is for the upper 10 percent of the junior and senior classes from all academic fields who have earned a minimum 3.85 grade point average over at least 80 course hours. It is also open to graduate students who rank in the top 10 percent of their specific program.
The Ashdown High School Band recently participated in the Region II Concert Band Assessment and earned first division ratings in prepared and sight reading music. These ratings, combined with the first division marching assessment earned the band the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association Sweepstakes Award. The band is under the direction of Mark Pounds and Chelsa Keathley.
Students from Texas Middle
School recently won top honors at the Region VIII Education Service Center Science Fair and the East Texas Regional Science Fair.
Winners in the Region VIII science fair were: Jenna Woodard, first place for 8th grade Physical Science category; Madelyn Bixler, first place for 6th grade Biological Science category; and, Lauren Roberson, second place for 6th Grade Biological Science category.
At the East Texas Regional Science Fair, Madelyn Bixler, won sixth place overall in Biological Science category. She will now advance to the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio, Texas, scheduled March 31 to April 1. Joseph DuPree won second place in the Physical Science category and a cash prize of $125 from the Texas Water Association. Macy Sloan also won third place in the Biological Science category and a cash prize of $100 from the American Chemical Society.
