Marshall didn’t play like a team at or near the bottom of the District 16-5A standings.

The Lady Mavericks played very well, and it took a combined shut out by Texas High pitchers Mabry Smith and Lindsey Egger to come away with a 5-0 victory at Lady Tiger Field Friday evening.

The state 10th-ranked Lady Tigers improve to 22-3 on the season and are undefeated at 9-0 in district play.

“It just goes to show that any team can get up and play well against a good team,” said Texas High coach Robbie Hatfield. “Their third-baseman and shortstop made some excellent plays.”

Texas High will be action next Tuesday against Benton, Ark., at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia.

The Tigers return to district play next Thursday at Sulphur Springs.

“We like to play against good teams to be ready for the playoffs,” said Hatfield. “Our losses have come from two 6A teams and one 5A team.”

“We’re playimg well right now and need to stay focused,” Hatfield added.

After scoring a run in the second inning, Texas High added three more runs on three hits in the third inning for a 4-0

advantage.

Winning pitcher Smith led off the frame with a double near the centerfield wall.

Courtney Cheek the singled home courtesy runner Madison Prince.

Kaitlyn Cross reached on an error and Ryann Williams beat out an infield hit. Both runners scored on a wild throw to first and reached third on the play.

Texas High made it, 5-0, in the fourth on a double by Ashley Wyrick and a sacrifice fly to right by Smith.

Meanwhile, Smith was rolling along with a no-hitter while striking out 11 batters in her five innings of work.

“I’m not sure if one of our errors was really a hit,” said Hatfield. “I wanted to give Lindsey (Egger) some innings.”

Marshall threatened in the sixth with a bunt single by Haylie Rich and a single by Gabby Moore.

Cate Truelove led off the seventh with a base hit, but was quickly erased on a double play. Makayla Powell and Vanessa Flowers followed with singles, but Egger retired leadoff batter Rich to preserve the shutout.
