A&M-Texarkana to host open house for pre-nursing majors

-

Texas A&M University-Texarkana will hold an open house for pre-nursing students at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Science and Technology building.

Nursing faculty and staff will share tips and strategies for success in the school’s program. The event is open to the public.

A&M-Texarkana will launch a traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing program this year, which includes 61 credit hours in prerequisite and core coursework and 59 credit hours in nursing courses.

Clinical courses will use state-of-the-art high-fidelity nursing skills and simulation laboratories. Students will be placed in local hospitals and other health care agencies in the region for direct patient-care experience.

“We are thrilled to offer this new program that will complement our existing RN to BSN transfer degree and Master of Science in Nursing program and provide an additional option for students who desire careers in health care,” Dr. Kathy Missildine stated in a press release.

Missildine is director of nursing and associate dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The first cohort of students have been admitted for the new program, with an additional 35 students to be admitted the second year and another 40 admitted the third year.

A&M Texarkana has received almost $2 million in state funding to expand the Nursing Department to meet the needs of students and the regional medical community.

The university also recently broke ground for a new academic complex that will include classroom space, the skills and simulation lab and faculty offices for the nursing program. The new Building for Academic and Student Services is expected to open in 2019.

“A&M-Texarkana is dedicated to providing outstanding opportunities for students pursuing careers in healthcare fields and for the medical community in our region,” Dr. David Reavis, interim dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics said. “The traditional BSN degree gives students the benefit of high-quality instruction in a supportive and enriching learning environment.”
