School to shine light on suicide prevention

Texas A&M University will hold a suicide prevention awareness glow party today at the school.

Texas A&M University­Texarkana will hold a suicide prevention awareness glow party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in Eagle Hall of the University Center on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.

The event is designed to spread awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention. The theme is “Celebrate Life!”

Speakers include A&MTexarkana alumni/writers Cassidy Ford, whose work is featured in the book “Project Semicolon,” and Marina Garza, whose work is featured on the mental health website “The Mighty.”

Hosts include A&MTexarkana Counseling Services and members of student organizati­on Spectrum.

“We know that stigma prevents many people from reaching out for help. We want to let our students know that there is no shame in asking for help and that we all struggle at some point in our lives,” said Briana Taylor with the A&M-Texarkana Counseling Services. “You don’t have to have a diagnosabl­e mental health disorder to see a counselor. We can teach people a wide range of skills to help manage stress, increase interperso­nal effectiven­ess, learn healthy boundaries and encourage personal growth.”

Music, food and door prizes will be available at the event.

The public is welcome to attend.
