Brahmas face off against familiar foe

- By Brian Tyl

OMAHA, NAPLES, Texas— Two Class 3A high schools, separated by a 16-mile stretch of FM 161 South, go head to head in a rivalry game at 7:30 p.m. today.

Hughes Springs (2-0) makes the short trip to Paul Pewitt (1-1) to take on the Brahmas, and each head coach is expecting a battle.

“It's going to be kind of an unknown-type game for us,” Paul Pewitt head coach Ryan Gentry said. “Hughes Springs has changed its offense since last year, and they have beat Daingerfield and Arp, which are two very good programs.”

Last week, Hughes Springs edged Arp, 22-21, on a late 2-point conversion run by Isaiah Bolden. Bolden rushed for 51 yards on 17 totes and a TD. The Mustangs led most of the game.

“The kids know each other, and it's a big rivalry game,” Hughes Springs head coach Chris Edwards said. “I expect a tough game. We should bring out the best in them, and, hopefully, they bring out the best in us.”

The Brahmas fell to a talented, physical Jefferson team, 42-16, a week ago. Pewitt's win came in season opener against Sabine, 49-12.

“We played Jefferson last week, and they beat us up quite a bit,” Gentry said. “We had a good first half but did not do so well in the other.”

Edwards said turnovers will be one of the keys to the game. “Their offense is pretty deadly, so we don't want to turn the ball over,” Edwards said. “Their quarterback, (Lucas) Hungerford, makes them go. So we have to limit the big play, because they have good speed. As long as we feel confident and execute well, we'll have a good chance.”

Gentry is looking to his defense to help keep the Brahmas in the game.

“We are going to have to shut down their offense,” Gentry said. “They like to get first downs and keep the chains moving. Offensively, we have to capitalize on big plays when we can and be good on first down.” Northeast Texas Schedule
