Lady Backs

-

The Lady Backs (0-1) take on Bradley tonight at Razorback Gym at 6 p.m.

“I’m excited about this season,” Arkansas High head basketball coach Venture Watson said. “I have some younger girls that will come up and get a chance to play. We lost one senior last year, so we’re finding out who will play where through our lineup. We’ve always had a tough conference schedule, so that’s always one thing we look forward to. It always makes for great basketball.”

The Arkansas High front court will include sophomore Fortunate Barry, senior Tierra Holliman and senior Kameryn Hayden, with other underclassmen to interchange the guard position when necessary.

“We have multiple girls that can play that position,” Watson said. “I’m trying to figure who is the best fit but we have a lot of girls that can get the job done for us when their name is called.”

The post play of the Lady Backs, is expected to build off last year’s experience to produce positive results for Watson’s bunch.

Seniors Brooklyn Brewer, Ty Strickland, juniors Cedrianna Daniels, Kiara Young and sophomore Sydnee Blackwell will hold down the blocks for AHS this upcoming season.

“Our girls gained a lot of experience last year,” Watson said. “Cedrianna played well for us as a sophomore last year and we’re expecting big things from her this year. Ty is super athletic and will get a lot of post action for us.

We just got Brooklyn back from volleyball,

so we have to get her into basketball shape. Sydnee is a newcomer for us but she has natural ability that you can’t teach. We will also look for positive production from Kiara. She’s very strong and she shoots the ball well.”

Juniors Flujustice Burton and Tierra Hawkins are two reserves that round out the Arkansas High roster.

“We’re running a eight player rotation but at any given time we could have 10 different girls at any given time,” Watson said. “The girls have done a great job this summer of working hard and getting into shape. You always back track a little bit when you add players from different sports to your roster, so that’s the phase we’re in now. Once we put that together, we should be able to go out there and compete with anyone. We’re going to have a tough schedule but that’s why you play the game.”
