Edgewood defeats Hooks in 49-14 win
SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas—Edgewood scored 36 unanswered points and defeated Hooks, 49-14, at Gerald Prim Stadium in a Class 3A, Division II bi-district playoff football game.
The Bulldogs' offense outgained the Hornets, 453-283 yards.
Hooks jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Logan Murray caught a 44-yard pass from Vasquez for the first score of the game. During the drive, Philip Dickerson, who finished with 73 yards on 11 carries, had a 16-yard run.
Edgewood took its first possession down the field 69 yards, and Carter Bates capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. During the Bulldog drive, Jordan Davison caught a 39-yard pass from Trey Erwin.
After swapping possessions, Edgewood's Isaiah Elie caught the ball and tore down the sideline for a 44-yard gain. A play later, Bates found the end zone from 3 yards out and the 2-point conversion was good to make it 14-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.
On the next possession, Hooks went for it on a 4th-and-9. Marquiz Estell picked up nine on a reverse sweep, but the measurement came up inches short. It appeared that Estell had made the first down.
After the turnover on downs, Jayden Morgan caught a 16-yard TD pass from Erwin. The PAT kick failed, and Edgewood took a 20-7 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs took the opening third quarter kick and drove downfield. Erwin ran it in from 14 yards to cap the drive and give Edgewood a 27-7 lead.
Dickerson had a 30-yard run for Hooks on the next drive, but it ended on an interception.
Erwin found Brayden Allen on a 10-yard pass to make it 35-7 after the 2-point conversion was successful.
Hooks fumbled on its first play on the next possession and the Bulldogs recovered.
Kyle Keltner had a 9-yard TD run to pad Edgewood's lead, 42-7.
Later in the third, Connor Price had a 34-yard punt return as the Hornets set up on the Bulldog 17-yard line. Three plays later, Nick Sanders ran it in from nine yards out to make it 42-14.
Edgewood scored again late to make it 49-14.
Hooks ends its season at 5-6.
