Patman reveals grant for state park in Atlanta

110 years ago January 15, 1908: MR. SOLOMON IS IMPROVING

Mr. W.W. Solomon, who is employed at the Texarkana Ice Co.’s office or plant, was the victim of a very painful and serious accident yesterday, being struck in the abdomen by a piece of machinery with such violence as to render him helpless for some time. The injured man was at first thought to be fatally hurt, but he is getting along fine today and it is thought he will be out in a few days.

Jan. 16: PEOPLE YOU KNOW

Mr. D.A. Frank, attorney for the Southweste­rn Telegraph and Telephone Co., at Dallas, Texas, is spending the day in the city on business. Judge Edwards is having this public roads in the neighborho­od of Old Rondo worked and repaired this week.

Jan. 17: BE PREPARED FOR THE COLD

The weatherman yesterday predicted “much cooler” for today, and he hit the nail fairly on the head. His prophecy for tonight is “freezing!” He ought to be lynched.

Jan. 18: AREA NEWS

Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Bradley, after a residence of several months at Dallas, have returned and will again make Texarkana their home.

Saturday night, The National Biscuit Co. will have a demonstrat­ion at A.J. Offenhause­r & Co. Everybody is cordially invited.

Jan. 19: HOME DESTROYED IN BLAZE AFTER COIL OIL LAMP EXPLODES

A residence owned by N.B. Townsend, 601 Whitaker (Rose Hill) and occupied by Mrs. White was destroyed by fire last night together with all the contents. The house was valued at $1,500 and was insured for $1,000. The fire is believed to have been due to the explosion of a coil oil lamp. There was not one at home at the time. Mrs. White had gone out to visit a neighbor and had left a lamp burning.

Jan. 20: HORSE RAN AWAY

The “old gray horse” belonging to Wright Printing Co. became frightened and ran wildly away this morning, much to the surprise of his owners and everyone else, as they had always known the “critter” as one of the most docile of the equine race. The animal with the buggy attached to him ran straight for Sand Flat and never stopped until he came directly in front of one of the “jints” in that quarter of the city. The buggy was badly wrecked. Jan. 21: POTATO ACREAGE

In February, Mr. Smith will be starting to plan his crops. This year, he will be doing 105 acres of Irish potatoes. The ground has already been prepared and fertilized. He is also planting 20 acres of Rocky Ford cantaloupe­s, eight acres of watermelon, five acres of strawberri­es, two acres of onions and a considerab­le amount of lettuce, radishes and tomatoes. 50 years ago

Miss Mable Manasco directed a program on “Aluminum” as guest speaker for the January meeting of the Horatio E.H. Club. Mrs. Tommy Brown directed the business session and Mrs. Nellie Pearson read a poem. Present were Mrs. Eugenia Dillahunty, Mrs. Richard Lowery, Mrs. Pearson, Mrs. Sam Collins, Mrs. Luther Smith, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Pearson.

Jan. 16: STRUCTURES TO BE DEMOLISHED

A resolution requiring that six substandar­d structures be demolished was passed by the Texarkana, Ark., Board of Directors Monday night. Structures at the corner of East Fifth and Laurel St., 2007 Grove, 1509 Walters, 2503 Hays, 1302 1/2 Laurel and 14006 Ray Streets were listed as substandar­d structures in the resolution.

Jan. 17: PORTER-MOSS MARRIAGE TOLD IN DE QUEEN

Mr. and Mrs. Jonnie Porter of Fort Smith announce the marriage of their daughter, Landis, to Lt. Walter R. Moss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glover C. Moss of DeQueen. Marriage vows were exchanged back on Dec. 20. Lt. Moss is in Army Helicopter School at Camp Walters, Texas, where the couple will make their home.

Jan. 18: REDWATER BASKETBALL SWEETHEART

Miss Mandie Nicholson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Nicholson of Rt. 6, Red Springs, was presented as the 196768 Basketball Sweetheart during 1968 Dragon Homecoming. Miss Nicholson’s escorts were Captain Mike Thompson and Co-Captain Jerry Morton. Maids of honor were Miss Lelia Bonner escorted by Eddie Bell, Miss Dessie Jones escorted by Macky McMahill, Miss Rozella Neff escorted by Bill Cooper.

Jan. 19: PATMAN REVEALS GRANT FOR STATE PARK AT ATLANTA

Congressma­n Wright Patman announced that the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation of the Department of the Interior had approved a grant of $35,200 for the design layout and constructi­on of outdoor recreation­al facilities at Atlanta State Park. The federal funds will be matched by the Texarkana Parks and Wildlife Department to provide for constructi­on of trailer camping units, a restroom and trailer sanitary dump stations, roads, necessary water, sewer, electrical system and landscapin­g.

Jan. 20: BARBER FIRES 73 IN KAISER OPEN

NAPA, Calif.—Miller Barber of Texarkana, a former Arkansas amateur champion, shot a 73 Thursday in the opening round of the Kaiser Internatio­nal Golf Tournament. Barber’s 38-35 round left him five shots behind the leaders.

Mrs. George C. Haskin returned recently from Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met her husband who was on an R&R leave from Tay Ninh, Vietnam. Mrs. Haskin is making her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell E. Harris while her husband is serving a tour of duty with the 11th Artillery Division of the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
