Two DeKalb teens arrested in threats cases

-

Two 14-year-old DeKalb Independent School District students, one male and one female, were arrested on charges of terroristic threats in separate incidents this week.

Both apparently had been bullied in the past, according to accounts.

In the first instance, a boy was arrested for allegedly writing, “I’m going to shoot up the school,” on a boys’ bathroom wall. It was found Tuesday and reported Wednesday, Police Chief Shawn Walraven said.

The boy reportedly had been bullied at school for about two years and wrote on the wall as an “outcry” about the situation, Walraven said.

“His was more of an outcry of, ‘Somebody look at what

is going on with me,’” he said.

When police investigated, they found no weapons at the student’s home.

The girl was arrested because of a “kill list” she had allegedly written in a journal. Another student, one of the alleged bullies, saw the list and reported it to authorities.

No weapons were found in the girl’s home, either, Walraven said. Both students have been released to their parents’ custody.

A Facebook post from DeKalb ISD commended students and staff for reporting threats: “We commend the individuals who made the report to DISD and the DISD personnel who immediately responded to the report. Be assured that DISD, its administration and its staff take all reports of this nature very seriously and will always be committed to providing our students with a learning environment in which they can feel safe and secure.”

The school’s website has forms for students to anonymously report bullying incidents.
