Defending champ Muenster eliminates Clarksvill­e

McKINNEY, Texas— Sometimes, the shots just don’t fall.

Defending state champion Muenster shot 48 percent from the field, while Clarksvill­e shot just 28 percent as the Hornets won, 50-30, in a Class 2A regional semifinal basketball game at Bulldog Gym on Friday.

“We couldn’t get the shots to fall, at all,” Blue Tiger head coach Willie Coulter said. “It was bad. These guys have heart, guts and desire. We played some great defense the entire game. We got stop, after stop, after stop, we just couldn’t score.”

Markeith Taylor had a double-double for Clarksvill­e with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers hit on 11 of 40 shots, while Muenster was 19-of-40 from the floor.

The Hornets went on an 11-3 run to end the third quarter and took a 15-point lead into the final stanza.

After Taylor hit a hook shot in the lane, Muenster went on a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Muenster went into the locker room with a 23-15 lead. Clarksvill­e went cold in the second quarter, as it hit on just 1 of 9 shots, while the Hornets were 5 of 9 for a shooting percentage of 56.

After Muenster jumped out up 4-0 in the first, Taylor hit a hook shot in the lane to put the Tigers on the board.

Quay Scales hit a layup, Kyrie King hit a charity shot, and Quay Scales drove in for another layup as Clarksvill­e went on a 5-0 run to end the first.

The teams played evenly in the first quarter as they each hit on 4 of 12 shots for a 33 field goal percentage. The first ended with the game knotted at 9-all.

Muenster’s first half shooting percentage of 43 percent (9 of 21 shooting) was the difference in the half as the Tigers shot 24 percent (5 of 21 shooting).

Quay Scales paced Clarksvill­e in the first half with eight points.

The Hornets were led by Dunny Luttmer who scored 14 points, and teammate John Weger added 10. Kody Waltersche­id pulled down 12 boards for Muenster.

Clarksvill­e ended its season at 24-7.
