TxDOT unveils plans to widen a segment of Kings Highwa

- By Junius Stone

Representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation showed the public their plans to widen Farm-to-Market Road 989 (Kings Highway) from I-30 to north of Gibson Lane.

“The plan is to widen Kings Highway from two to five lanes, including two traffic lanes in each direction divided by a continuous left turn lane,” according to Mark Sandifer, TxDOT public information officer.

The outside traffic lanes will be two feet wider as multiuse lanes to accomodate bicycle traffic. The new roadway will include curb and gutter drainage, six-foot sidewalks and lighting, according to a press release.

The total affected length of Kings Highway will be just over a half-mile along the stated route. Expected cost is to be around $3.9 million. The work is expected to kick off in summer 202o.

Approximately 2.3 acres of right-of-way would be required for the proposed project.

According to Sandifer, one of the purposes of the meetings was to let the public see the project and get in comments and possible objections. For the most part, those attending seemed happy with the idea, but some had questions, especially those whose property wouldld bbe affected. ff d “Those who have proper- ty affected by this will be discussing the issue with independent appraisers,” Sandifer said.
