Lafayette County car chase ends in crash, arrest

A Texas resident remains behind bars in Lafayette County after allegedly attempting to ram a Lewisville, Ark., patrol car headon Tuesday during a 10-minute chase.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, Lewisville Police Chief Jason Tomlin drove to the scene of a hit-andrun accident on U.S. Highway 82 West, according to a report by Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. En route, the chief observed a black Volkswagen Jetta speeding east.

The Jetta was registered to Sammy Lee Ogan, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Tomlin turned around and made a traffic stop with this vehicle. As he approached the vehicle, Ogan thrust his hands out the Jetta and refused to exit, despite being asked several times to do so, according to the report. Tomlin then called for assistance.

Ogan reportedly put the car in gear and fled eastbound, and Tomlin pursued. At some point, Ogan allegedly made a U-turn and headed back west, intentionally driving into oncoming traffic and Tomlin, who was able to avoid an accident.

As the chase continued west, once past the city limits, Ogan allegedly again made a U-turn and attempted to hit Tomlin headon. This time, he hit the left rear door of the police Tahoe, making it spin and causing the side airbags to deploy.

With the assistance of Stamps Police Department, Tomlin pulled Ogan from his vehicle and handcuffed him.

Tomlin and Ogan had minor injuries.

Arkansas State Police was contacted to investigate. Charges are pending.
