Harmon, Hawks build lead, outlast Atlanta
ATLANTA, Texas—It’s hard to come back from 21 unanswered points.
Ben Harmon account for five touchdowns—three via the air and two rushing—to lead Pleasant Grove to a 49-35 win over Atlanta on Friday at Rabbit
The Hawks (3-0) scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 35-14 lead into halftime.
“I thought that we made some big plays in our passing and running games,” Pleasant Grove head coach Josh Gibson said. “We were really balanced; that is a credit to our running backs, linemen, quarterback and receivers.”
Brett Walker hauled in two touchdown passes, from 31 and 68 yards, from Harmon.
Bruce Garrett totaled 165 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown, while senior running back James Wiggins amassed 153 yards on 19 totes and a score.
Pleasant Grove capped a 75-yard drive in 4:43 when Harmon found Walker for a 31-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Jawan King, who finished with 152 yards on 18 carries for Atlanta, found the end zone from eight yards out to knot the game at 7-all early in the first.
Harmon had a 5-yard TD run to put the Hawks up, 14-7. The score capped a seven-play, 66-yard drive in 2:22.
Pleasant Grove outscored the Rabbits, 21-7, in the second quarter to take a 21-point lead into the locker room.
Atlanta’s Andrew Samples threw a 53-yard pass to Farron Hall to knot the game at 14-all.
Walker hauled in his second touchdown reception from Harmon on a 68-yarder to give Pleasant Grove a 21-14 lead.
Kamren Woods intercepted a Samples’ pass and return it 23 yards as the Hawks set up on Atlanta’s 37-yardline.
Bruce Garrett picked up 23 yards on a hard-nosed run to give PG a first-and-goal from the eight yardline. After Wiggins ran for seven yards, Harmon punched the ball in from a yard out to give the Hawks a 28-14 advantage.
Pleasant Grove defensive end Marcus Burris poked away a Rabbit toss on the quarterback run option on a fourth-and-2, and PG took over on downs.
Wiggins scored a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 35-14. The run capped a 10-play, 64-yard drive in 1:52.
Caleb Hamilton, who totaled 88 yards on six carries, scored from 20 yards away for the Rabbs to make it 35-21.
Wiggins ran the ball five times for 34 yards during the next drive to help set up a Sergio Rodriguez 28-yard touchdown reception from Harmon to pad the Hawks lead, 42-21. The score came after a 71-yard, nine play drive in 4:07.
Hamilton had a 5-yard touchdown run for Atlanta in the third quarter to cap an eight-play, 68-yard drive in 2:49.
But Garrett broke free and scored a 40-yard TD to make it 49-28 in favor of PG headed into the fourth quarter.
Rabbit quarterback Andrew Samples had the only score of the fourth quarter when he found paydirt from five yards out with 2:25 left in the game.
