Lady Tigers batter Greenville, 95-16

Texas High found something to keep playing for in a lopsided District 15-5A opener against Greenville.

The Lady Tigers were chasing triple digits in the fourth quarter, coming up just short en route to a 95-16 victory over the Lady Lions Friday at Tiger Center.

THS shot 58 percent (42 of 73) from the field and 68 percent in the second half. Greenville didn’t score in the fourth quarter as Texas High kept its intensity going from opening tip to final whistle.

The Tigers held a 32-21 advantage on the glass, committed 13 turnovers and forced 41 and limited the Lions to 21 percent shooting on 6 of 28 field goals.

All but one player on the THS lineup scored, with Kerrighan Dunn pouring in 22 points and grabbing six rebounds to lead in both categories.

Antonia Porter and Mia Wilson each added 16 points for the Tigers, and Amiya Rone contribute­d 14 points.

Holding a 53-12 lead at halftime, Texas High continued to pull away in the second half.

The Tigers started the third quarter on a 9-0 run and closed the period on an 8-0 rally, building a 72-16 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

Greenville led 4-2 for 11 seconds, but the Tigers scored 18 consecutiv­e points over a 3-minute span to go ahead 20-4 with 3:25 left in the first quarter.

Three more buckets by Texas High made it 26-4 before the Lions closed the quarter on a 6-0 run. That streak was answered by the Tigers in the second quarter with a 13-0 rally, building a 39-10 lead with 5:32 left in the half.

Greenville’s only points in the second quarter came on a layup by Brooke Hutchings at 5:05, and THS closed the half on a 14-point rally.

The Tigers shot 52 percent (25 of 48) in the first half, held a 20-14 advantage in rebounds and forced 23 turnovers before intermissi­on.

Hutchings had eight of Greenville’s points and grabbed five rebounds, as well.

In the junior varsity game, the Tigers built a 52-5 halftime lead and cruised to a 76-16 victory. Ashlyn Stiger led Texas High with 13 points, Ashanti Northcross had 11 and Amari Morrison added 10.

Greenville won the freshmen game, 41-32, with Brea McFrazier pouring in 20 points to lead the Lions. Brooklyn Hunt paced THS with 10 points.
