Lady Hawks beat Bulldogs to advance

- By Brian Tyl

LONGVIEW, Texas—Pleasant Grove put the dogs in the pen.

Despite a slow start, the Lady Hawks rolled past Tyler Chapel Hill, 61-44, Tuesday at Lobo Coliseum in a Class 4A bi-district varsity girls basketball game.

Pleasant Grove (27-3) will play Crandall later this week in a Class 4A area playoff game.

“We started off slow, and we threw the ball away too many times,” Lady Hawks head coach Marsha Cowling said. “We got our offense going in the second half. It was a good win, but we are going to work on some things. Our defense is our bright point, and we are going to continue to be physical.”

Shanequa Henry lit up the nets for 19 points to lead the Hawks. Keshawn Davis scored 14 points, and Maiya Ware added 13.

Ty’liyah Moore swished in 19 points for the Bulldogs.

Pleasant Grove shot 49 percent from the field on 21-of-43 shooting, while Chapel Hill hit on 14 of 40 shots as they shot 35 percent from the field.

The Bulldogs outrebounded the Hawks, 25-18, but committed more turnovers, 21-16.

Pleasant Grove took a 41-24 lead with just one quarter left to play. The teams played on even keel in the fourth with both scoring 20 points.

Chapel Hill (20-15) went on a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks came back with an 8-0 run to pad their lead.

Asia Lloyd hit a pair of charity shots, Ashanti Levingston made a putback, and Henry had two layups during the run.

Pleasant Grove turned up its defense in the third quarter and limited the Bulldogs to just five points. Davis paced the Hawks in the third with six points coming

from an 8-foot jump shot, a pair of charity shots, and a layup.

Both teams got off to a slow start, and there was more scoring in the last three minutes of the first quarter than there was in the first five.

Henry drove in a hit a layup to give the Hawks a 7-5 lead in the first. A little later, Henry converted a traditional 3-point play to put Pleasant Grove up 12-9.

The Bulldogs hit a layup just before the end of the quarter to make it a 1-point affair, 12-11.

The Hawks found more rhythm in the second quarter, and five different players scored.

Henry ripped the nets on a pair of shots from downtown and had eight points in the second quarter.

Pleasant Grove took a ninepoint lead into the locker room, 28-19.
