Stoney LaRue soon at Scottie’s, more live music to come
The local live music scene is heating up just as the days gather more daylight and a bit more warmth, including a lineup of Red Dirt and Texas-style country coming to Scottie’s Grill.
Stoney LaRue is on the way for a Saturday, March 23, show at Scottie’s Grill, and certainly this Red Dirt regular has no shortage of local fans, having been a steady and passionate live show presence at Texarkana-area venues for several years with concerts at local hotspots like Linden’s Music City Texas Theater. Reportedly, LaRue has new music on the way for 2019.

After LaRue shines for the locals, several big ticket, homegrown, Texas country acts come to Scottie’s: Whiskey Myers (originally from Palestine) on Friday, April 5, Randy Rogers Band (originally from San Marcos) on Friday, May 3, Josh Abbott Band (originally from Lubbock) on Friday, May 24, Neal McCoy (originally from Jacksonville) on Saturday, June 8, and Wade Bowen (originally from Waco) on
Friday, June 28. It’s all parts Texas.
However, this weekend gets hyper-local at Scottie’s with Relentless tonight, Dusty Rose Band for Saturday night—two of the most popular, visible acts here. You can also catch Dusty Rose Band tonight at Fat Jack’s Oyster and Sports Bar, where Relentless will also play March 30.
Also Saturday night, this year’s Jonquil Festival at Historic Washington State Park features the “Nashville Star” show champ and Arkansas native Buddy Jewell, who parlayed his success there into two albums for Columbia Records before moving on. His first two singles both rose to Top 5 status on the charts: “Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey’s Song)” and “Sweet Southern Comfort.” He’ll perform starting at 7 p.m. at the entertainment pavilion at the Jonquil Festival. It’s a free show.
Another Saturday night show features two national touring act plus hometown rockers Old Flames. Joining the Flames are metal act Howling Giant, Indianabased rockers Archarus and self-described “progressive metal” Celestials from Little Rock for a $5 show at Broadway Billiards Sports Bar, which opened this past November in the 200 block of East Broad Street.
Valley of the Vapors Independent Music Festival in Hot Springs brings an eclectic mix of indie goodness to the spa town today through Monday with venues Low Key Arts, Maxine’s, Grateful Head Pizza (tonight’s after party) and The Big Chill hosting acts hailing from Los Angeles to Brooklyn, Ontario and all points in between.
Check out the hardworking duo Dazz & Brie, who have a local connection and have really made a splash in the state’s music scene, Sunday night at Maxine’s as your best bet for a fantastic show. Also check out Death Hags, The Bright Light Social Hour, Locate S,1 and Dead Soft, plus headliners like Billy Ruben and the Elevated Enzymes, Adventureland, Big Piph, Fossils of Ancient Robots and Jamie Lou & the Hullabaloo.
This year’s Songwriters on the Edge of Texas on April 14 features one-of-akind country artist Junior Brown as headliner with perennial local favorite Trey Johnson and Texarkana native Jed Harrelson opening. Tickets are $75 with information available via CasaTexarkana.org.
Looking ahead to May, tickets just went on sale this week to patrons for the May 10 Marty Stuart concert at Music City Texas Theater. Tickets go on sale Tuesday for the general public. Tickets are $50, or $200 for the front-row VIP treatment.
