100 years ago May 27, 1919: PERSONALS

Since the purchase of the property at 717 Olive by Mrs. M. E. Fuller, who is now making it her home, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Allen, who resided there for a number of years, have apartments with Mrs. Allen’s sister, Mrs. John Wheeler, at 1002 Maple Street. A. W. Allen, who has been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen, for a few days, has departed for a business trip to New York.

May 28: WOMEN’S SOCIETY

Monday marked the departure of Miss Evelyn Hill of Lake Providence La., and Miss Eloise of Waldo, Ark., for their homes after a round of pleasure as the guests of Miss Corrinne Turner. ALSO: Miss R. E. Major has concluded her visit with her sister, Mrs. A. B. Moore, and departed for Arkadelphi­a where she will be the guest of friends before going to her home in Monroe, La.

May 29: OF INTEREST TO WOMEN

The faculty of the Arkansas high school entertaine­d the members of the senior class last evening, the hospitalit­y taking place at the gymnasium at the school. ALSO—Mrs. J. T. Springer and daughter, Miss Edna, and son, J. T. Springer Jr., have departed for a visit in Shreveport. ALSO: Mrs. Alvin Black has accompanie­d Dr. Black on his trip to one of the aviation schools where he will take his final course in flying. On his graduation, Dr. and Mrs. Black will probably be stationed at San Diego, Calif.

May 30: BOWIE COUNTY Mrs. A. B. Dividson, Bowie county home demonstrat­ion agent, attended the meeting of the Nash home demonstrat­ion club this week at the home of Mrs. J. W. Ueavy. The next meeting will be held June 9 at the home of Mrs. J. R. Pugh, when fireless cookers and iceless refrigerat­ors will be demonstrat­ed. May 31: ARKANSAS SIDE BUILDS ENLARGED POUND PEN

Good headway was made yesterday in the building of the pound pen and quarters for stock on the lots purchased by the Arkansas side of the city on East Ninth Street on the site of the gin which burnt down. Mayor McLain had a good supply of workers to help get the pens and building built.

June 1: ORGANIZE CLUB AT LIBERTY

The ladies of the Liberty community met Friday afternoon and organized a home Demonstrat­ion Club, a large number of enthusiast­ic ladies being present. Mrs. A. B. Davidson, Bowie county demonstrat­ion agent, supervised the organizing of the new club, for which the following officers were elected: Mrs. S. Greenwood, chairman; Mrs. F. F. Mathews, vice chairman; Mrs. A. B. Black, secretary, Mrs. W. F. David, assistant secretary. The ladies of the new club are taking up work of producing infertile eggs. It being voted to use and market infertile eggs, in the view of the great loss every summer from the use of fertile eggs. Plans will be made at the next meeting for securing a gas stove for use in home demonstrat­ion work.

June 2: REPORT OF RELIEF COMMITTEE

The following report of the work done by the military and civilian relief committee of the Texarkana chapter of the Red Cross has been given as follows by Miss Mary DeLoach, chairman of the committee: Families assisted, 24; families rendered personal service, 14; families given informatio­n, 10; letters written, 5; reports for army officers, 1; reports to division Red Cross officers, 6; telegrams sent, 3; soldiers given financial, 6.

50 years ago May 27, 1969: EDUCATIONA­L DIRECTOR HONORED

Mrs. A. J. Davis was honored with a beautifull­y appointed reception in the parlors of the First Methodist Church, Arkansas. Mrs. Davis, who has been educationa­l director of the church for the past 15 years, was presented a gift of appreciati­on from the church by the pastor, Rev. Ralph Hillis, and from the Century Class by Chism Wood Jr.

May 28: NEWCOMERS HAVE BRIDGE LUNCHEON

The Texarkana Newcomers Club held a luncheon bridges meeting at Holiday Inn with Miss Florence Pickens and Mrs. Roger Wells as hostesses. Mrs. Bonnie Wray was welcomed as a new member. The winners of the hostess prizes were Mrs. Nell Bales and Mrs. Martel.

May 29: WATER SUPPLY BIDS TAKEN

Twenty-four constructi­on firms placed open bids for the constructi­on of water treatment facilities and distributi­on lines of Lake Texarkana Water Supply Corporatio­n. The bids were called for at the Texarkana, Texas, City Hall at 1:30 p.m. “The bids were well within the estimates,” replied B. A. Lemser, a representa­tive of Lake Texarkana Water Supply.

May 30: COMMITTEE WILL SPONSOR ‘YARD OF THE MONTH’

Mrs. Harold Gray, chairman of the home and residentia­l committee, Beauty in Texarkana, announces plans for a “Yard of the Month” contest to be sponsored by her committee during the summer months. Yards will be selected from both Arkansas and Texas sides of the city with the first selections being announced during the first week of June. Signs will be placed in each winner’s yard, and a picture and address will be published of the winners each month in the Texarkana Gazette and Daily News, enabling interested citizens to drive by and view the winning yards.

May 31: MUSIC CLUB RATES AT STATE

The Wednesday Music Club held its final meeting of the year at the home of Mrs. B. A. Watson. Miss Ann Ahern reported on the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs convention and announced that special awards were given the Texarkana radio stations and the Texarkana Gazette for outstandin­g participat­ion in Music Week. Also Miss Ahern reported the Wednesday Music Club received one of the state’s awards for fine programs and carrying out the precepts of the National Federation.

June 1: SCHOOL NEWS

Stamps boys attending Arkansas Boys State at Camp Robinson this week are Allen Dale Baker, Fred Fore, Jerry Don Millican, Drew Parker, Asa Warmack and Mike Zaremba, and 1st and 2nd alternates are Jerry Minter and Ricky Shelton. Stamps girls to attend Arkansas Girls State June 8th through June 14th are Linda May and Kathy Wood. ALSO—Magnolia— Recently elected cheerleade­rs for 1969-70 at Waldo High School are Patty Wideman, Beverly Hudgens, Karen Lewis, Barbie Key, Nita Lee, Janice Neill and Sondra Ray.

June 2: FOUR STATES AREA NEWS

The first of a series of Vacation Bible schools will begin here at the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. D. F. Turner will serve as general superinten­dent and the Reverend Kirvin Hale, pastor, will serve as the director. Assisting in the various department­s will be Mrs. Diane McMurrough, Mrs. Betty Lou Black, Mrs. Linda Baker, Mrs. Virginia Ann Baker, Mrs. Dorothy Wood and members of the Young People’s department of the church.
