‘I’ve Been Around’ was hit for a former TV ‘Duke’
This week in 1984: A New York court ruled the mandatory death penalty law was unconstitutional; U.S. announced that airbags or automatic seat belts would be required in cars by 1989; President Ronald Reagan announced that Laos would allow the United States to search for remains of American aviators; and a singer/actor from Mount Kisco, N.Y., had his 7th hit record.
A lot of hit songs have seemed to come from out of nowhere and according to Bob McDill, John Schneider’s 1984 No. 1, “I’ve Been Around Enough to Know” was certainly one of those tunes.
Bob commented, “I really do not know where the idea for that song came from. I think it just came to my mind one day when I was just sitting around with nothing on my mind to write. I always liked the idea of that song. It’s kind of a cold admission to a lover that there’s just nothing more here than just lust—so let’s don’t pretend that this is anything but just that. You don’t have to lie and say you love me and I won’t lie and say I love you. Let’s just be honest with each other. And that’s fine.”
Schneider’s MCA Records single “I’ve Been Around Enough To Know” came on the country music charts July 28, 1984 and made it to No. 1.
It was his 7th charted song and his first No. 1. The single was on the charts for 28 weeks.
Schneider placed 17 songs on the country music charts from 1981 through 1987— including four No. 1s. He is best known for his role as Bo Duke in the “Dukes of Hazzard” television series.
John Schneider co-founded the Children’s Miracle Network with Marie Osmond and her brothers in 1982. And in 1995, he founded Faith Works Productions in order to produce family-oriented videos and recordings. While living with Johnny and June Carter Cash in 1988, Schneider became a bornagain Christian after talking to Johnny about Christianity.
