Pleasant Grove girls remain undefeated,

TEXARKANA, Texas — It was twice the pleasure in a double feature at Hawk Gym on Friday.

Pleasant Grove’s varsity girls steam rolled Pittsburg, 86-52. The Lady Hawks (204, 3-0) remained undefeated in District 15-4A.

The Hawks earned their first district win with a 70-57 victory in the boys’ contest.

Ashanti Levingston, who scored 16 points in the first quarter, finished with a game-high 20 points for Pleasant Grove’s girls.

Marcus Burris had a double-double for the Hawks with 26 points and 11 rebounds. T’vondrick Henry poured in 26 points for Pleasant Grove.

Girls Pleasant Grove 86, Pittsburg 52

A furious pace was set right from the start. Bryana Block knocked down a trey for the Hawks’ first basket.

Levingston hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter en route to scoring 16 points, which was a point more than Pittsburg’s first-quarter team total of 15.

Block scored seven points in the first quarter, and Pleasant Grove took an early 29-15 lead.

The Hawks went on an 11-0 run early in the second quarter. Asia Lloyd started the run with her shot from downtown, Shanequa Henry drove in for a layup, Lloyd connected on a trey and Taylor Whitaker hit a jump shot along with a charity shot to complete the run.

Pleasant Grove went into the locker room with a 26-point lead, 47-21. The Hawks knocked down eight treys in the first half.

Lloyd led Pleasant Grove with five points in the third quarter. The third was plagued with missed shots and turnovers for each team. The Hawks took a 30-point lead into the final stanza.

Henry came alive in the fourth quarter. She scored 10 points and finished with 12 for Pleasant Grove.

The final quarter was played on even terms with the Hawks outscoring the Pirates, 23-22.

Levingston finished with a game-high 20 points, while Miaya Ware pulled down a teamhigh 10 rebounds for PG.

Lloyd poured in 14 points, and teammate Block put up 10.

The Hawks shot 52 percent from the field on 33-of-64 shooting, while Pittsburg hit 20 of 55 shots for 36 percent. The Pirates out-rebounded Pleasant Grove, 35-32.

In the turnover department, the Hawks committed far less, 30-21.

Boys

Pleasant Grove 70, Pittsburg 57

The Hawks bolted out of the locker room after halftime on fire. Henry scored 11 points in the third, many points coming from layups, as PG outscored the Pirates 23-12 in the quarter.

Following the leadership of Henry, Burris and Layton Jackson in the final stanza, the Hawks closed out the game with a 13-point win.

Jackson, who finished with 11 points, scored nine of his points in the fourth which included four points from two emphatic slam dunks.

Burris used his size to muscle into the interior of Pittsburg’s defense and finished the first quarter with 10 of Pleasant Grove’s 14 points.

The first half was played evenly by both squads. Trailing 4-2, the Hawks went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-4 lead.

The Pirates put together a 9-2 rally and trailed by a point at the end of the first break.

Pittsburg hit a shot from downtown to start the second quarter and took a 16-14 lead. The second was a back-and-forth affair.

Burris’ traditiona­l 3-point play late in the second capped a 6-0 Pleasant Grove spurt. Burris pulled down five boards in the first half as the Hawks went into the locker room clinging to a 27-26 lead.

Pleasant Grove hit on 28 of 48 shots for 58 percent from the field, while Pittsburg sunk 21 of 45 for 47 percent.

The Hawks out-rebounded the Pirates, 34-20, and had fewer turnovers, 21-17.
