Father accused of stabbing son to death makes first court appearance
TEXARKANA, Texas — A man accused of stabbing his son to death last month made a brief court appearance Tuesday in a Bowie County courtroom via video conferencing software.
Elgin Hollingsworth, 49, appeared with Houston lawyer Richard Chandler for a preindictment hearing before 102nd District Judge Jeff Addison. Assistant District Attorney Randle Smolarz said the case is expected to be presented to a grand jury later this month for possible indictment.
Chandler said he intends to file some motions in the case.
Elgin Hollingsworth has been charged with murder in the April 14 stabbing of his 25-year-old son, Demoryea Hollingsworth. Members of the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home on Golden Rule
Road in Texarkana,
Texas, in reference to a call for help made by Elgin Hollingsworth.
When police arrived, Demoryea Elgin had been taken to a local hospital and Elgin Hollingsworth had left the scene though he continued to converse with emergency dispatchers on his phone. Inside the house, officers found a bloody butcher knife lying near the kitchen sink. A pool of blood and a bloody fleece jacket were found in a nearby bedroom.
Elgin Hollingsworth was stopped by Texarkana, Texas, police on South Robison Road and detained. Elgin Hollingsworth allegedly told investigators that his son spent the night at the house the evening before and that he’d accused him of stealing money from his wallet the morning of April 14.
Elgin Hollingsworth allegedly claimed his son threatened to physically assault him and moved toward him aggressively. Elgin Hollingsworth allegedly told officers he was backed into the kitchen stove when he grabbed the knife and stabbed his son in the abdomen.
Hollingsworth is currently charged with murder. If indicted on that charge and if found guilty, Elgin Hollingsworth faces five to 99 years or life in prison. Bail is set at $1 million.
