‘Bigger and better’

Nashville High School senior Dalton Brown ready to lead Scrappers this fall

- By Earl Gill

NASHVILLE, Ark. — The Nashville Scrapper football program has a lineage of producing Division I-caliber offensive linemen.

Scrapper junior Dalton Brown is falling in line, like his predecessors.

“It feels great really,” Brown said. “Growing up, I remember watching Kirby Adcock and everyone knowing his name. I felt like I kinda wanted to be like him when I got a little older.

“Coach Volarvich doesn’t seem like a coach sometimes. As long as it’s not during the season, he’s just like one of the guys. He’ll come joke around with us. He’ll come out and wrestle with his son. He’s a lot of fun.”

Brown also recently received his first offer from Southeast Missouri State, followed by University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Ouachita Baptist University and the University of Central Arkansas.

“Well, I’ve definitely been excited for them,” Brown said. “Four weeks ago, I had zero offers. Nobody was really even too much interested in me. Out of nowhere, I got SEMO, UAPB, OBU and finally UCA. It’s all been overwhelming.”

Brown has found unique ways with his teammates to stay in shape for the upcoming football season.

“Well, me and some guys will run in a field or lift weights at one of their houses,” Brown said. “We want to end up being bigger and better than we were last year. If we all stay focused, we have a chance. I quit basketball early in January to concentrate on football more. I had to wait nine weeks until the basketball season

was over and the week I was supposed to start offseason, Governor (Asa) Hutchinson closed all the schools.

“I’m feeling pretty good about it,” Brown said. “We have a lot of guys coming back from last year that saw a lot of action. Hopefully, we’ll be able to make a deep playoff run and see what happens from there.”

Brown is also thinking about his next steps after Scrapper football.

“When I get to college, I plan to major in kinesiology or physical education,” Brown said. “Once I’m done playing, I want to be a coach.

It would be nice to come back to Nashville and coach football. Ultimately, I just want to coach football but it doesn’t matter the destination, but it would be really nice to come back to my hometown.”

The Scrappers open the season on Aug. 28, hosting Pleasant Grove.
