Man accused of threatening with hammer and a knife

- By Lynn LaRowe

TEXARKANA, Texas — Police arrested a local man earlier this month for allegedly kicking in a door before threatening residents with a hammer and a knife.

Lamaro Bishop, 38, was arrested earlier this month for burglary of a habitation with the intent to commit another felony. A probable cause affidavit

alleges the other felony was aggravated assault.

Texarkana, Texas, police were called July 5 to the Town North Apartments on Elizabeth Street because of a disturbance. When officers arrived, Bishop was allegedly standing face to face with another man who appeared to be protecting a woman and her 13-year-old daughter.

A hammer and a pocket knife, which Bishop allegedly brought with him, were sitting on a television stand within Bishop’s reach. Officers took Bishop into custody after he allegedly became belligerent when asked to step outside the apartment.

Bishop allegedly appeared intoxicated as evidenced by slurred speech, glassy eyes and disorientation. The woman who lived in the apartment reported that she knows Bishop and that he kicked the door to her apartment in and immediately went to a love seat where her 13-year-old daughter was sleeping. Bishop allegedly pulled a blanket off the girl and told her to stand as he stood over her with a hammer in his hand.

The girl ran to her mother on the other side of the room where she was napping on a couch. Bishop allegedly pulled a knife from his waistband, opened it up and held it in a threatening manner. A man who had been sleeping on the same couch as the mother put himself between Bishop and the mother and girl. The man told officers he managed to get Bishop to set his weapons on the television.

Bishop is being held in the Bowie County jail with bail set at $60,000. The case has not been presented to a grand jury for possible indictment. If Bishop is later indicted for burglary of a habitation with the intent to commit another felony, he faces five to 99 years or life in prison.
