Hogs win big; Texas-Baylor postponed

FAYETTEVIL­LE, Ark — The University of Arkansas hit the century mark as the Razorbacks stayed unbeaten with a 100-75 win over the Central Arkansas Bears Saturday night in Bud Walton Arena.

Arkansas improves to 6-0 on the season while the Bears slip to 0-4.

The Razorbacks led by 41-35 at halftime before dominating the second half, 59-40.

Five players scored in double figures for Arkansas. JD Notae led the way with 22 points, Desi Sills and Jalen Tate added 17 each, Moses Moody 15 and Justin Smith 12.

The Razorbacks’ next game is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 20 at home against Oral Roberts.

Baylor vs. Texas postponed

WACO, Texas — No. 2 Baylor has paused team activities because of COVID-19 issues, leading to another high-profile game getting nixed for the Bears.

The Bears were scheduled to play their Big 12 opener today against No. 13 Texas, but Baylor coach Scott Drew announced the pause in team activities Saturday. Baylor’s scheduled game Tuesday night against Tarleton State, added just last week, has also been postponed and the status of a Dec. 19 game at Kansas State is still to be determined.

Both the Texas and Tarleton State games could be reschedule­d.

The school didn’t provide any additional details on what led the pause Saturday.

Baylor (4-0), the preseason Big 12 favorite, has now played only one of the first seven games as listed on its original schedule.

The Bears last weekend had their highly anticipate­d showdown against No. 1 Gonzaga in Indianapol­is called off about 90 minutes before tipoff. A Bulldogs player was among two people in their traveling party tested positive for COVID-19.

Texas (5-1) won the Maui Invitation­al, which was played in North Carolina, before its first loss was 68-64 last Sunday at home to No. 9 Villanova. The Longhorns’ 4-0 start was the program’s best start in six years under coach Shaka Smart, who just last season was under intense pressure and speculatio­n he could lose his job.

The Longhorns are scheduled to play at home against Sam Houston State on Wednesday.

TCU 73, Texas A&M 55

FORT WORTH, Texas — RJ Nembhard scored 16 points and distribute­d nine assists and TCU beat Texas A&M.

Mike Miles scored 15 with five assists for the Horned Frogs (5-2), PJ Fuller scored 13 with four assists and TCU tallied 22 assists on 26-for50 (52%) shooting. TCU made 10 of 23 from 3-point range.

Texas A&M (3-1) shot 18 for 47 (38%) and missed 13 of 17 from 3-point range. Jay Chandler led the Aggies with 12 points, Quenton Jackson scored 11 and Emanuel Miller 10.

Miles’ layup with 12:03 remaining before halftime gave the Horned Frogs an 11-10 lead and they led the rest of the way. TCU went on to outscore the Aggies 30-8 over the next nine minutes and went on to build a 42-21 halftime lead.

Jaedon LeDee’s layup with 14:12 remaining gave TCU its largest lead at 58-25.

Notre Dame 64, Kentucky 63

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Nate Laszewski scored 21 points, Notre Dame put Kentucky into a historic first-half deficit, and the Irish held on for their first-ever victory in Lexington, nipping the Wildcats.

The Fighting Irish used a 19-0 run in the first half to open a 33-9 lead and were up 48-26 at the half. It was the largest halftime deficit in a home game in Kentucky’s history.

The Wildcats got back in it with a 16-0 run and trailed by one when Isaiah Jackson’s block of a Laszewski’s 3-pointer led to a shotclock violation with 12 seconds left. Olivier Sarr missed an open 15-footer from the right wing with a second left and Devin Askew was too late flying in from the left for a putback.

Prentis Hubb added 18 points for Notre Dame (2-3), which gave up an eight-point halftime on lead on Tuesday in losing to No. 22 Ohio State by five points. The Irish also lost their season opener to No. 13 Michigan State by 10.

Texas Tech 77, A&M-Corpus Christi 57

FRISCO, Texas — Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 15 points in his return from an ankle injury and No. 17 Texas Tech beat Texas A&MCorpus Christi, 77-57, for coach Chris Beard’s 100th victory with the Red Raiders.

Freshman Micah Peavy and graduate transfer Marcus Santos-Silva scored 12 points apiece for the Red Raiders (6-1), who never trailed after finding themselves behind with eight minutes to go before avoiding a major upset in their previous game against Abilene Christian.

The game at the home of the Dallas Mavericks’ G League team was the second neutral-site meeting in the Dallas area in two weeks for the Red Raiders. They lost to No. 7 Houston, 64-53, in a Top 25 matchup in Fort Worth. It was Texas Tech’s final tune-up before its Big 12 opener against No. 5 Kansas on Thursday.

Beard is 100-45 in his fifth season with Texas Tech, which made the school’s first trip to the national championsh­ip game in the most recent NCAA Tournament in 2019. Virginia won the title in overtime. Beard, who was an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight for the Red Raiders more than a decade ago, also led them to the Elite Eight in 2018.

Tennessee 65, Cincinnati 56

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — John Fulkerson had 15 points and 12 rebounds, helping No. 12 Tennessee pull away late in the second half to beat Cincinnati.

A 3-pointer by David DeJulius put Cincinnati ahead 53-51 with 6:14 left. The 6-foot-9 Fulkerson came back with four foul shots, giving the Vols (2-0) the lead for good.

Jaden Springer added 11 for Tennessee, making five foul shots. The Vols went 25 for 30 from the line while Cincinnati went 4 for 7.

Jeremiah Davenport came off the bench to lead the Bearcats (2-2) with 14 points. DeJulius scored 11 and Tari Eason had 10.

Keith Williams, who came into the game as Cincinnati’s leading scorer at over 17 points per game, was limited to six.
