An explosion of hair, fashion to start new year

- By Aaron Brand

TEXARKANA, Ark. — After the 2020 everyone has experienced, to look good and to feel good starting 2021 may be the right idea, self-care style.

To that end, Redemption Renaissance and Redemption Records will partner to present the 2021 Hair & Fashion Explosion starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, at Arkansas-side venue On the Boulevard.

The fashion show is much more than just that, though, with live music, deejayed music, hair stylists and vendors all in the mix.

Local stylist Misha Bell has organized this event, and she has a few years of experience with hair shows. She’s also a part of local nonprofit Brighter Tomorrow Foundation.

“We target the youth of today,” she said, with programs like mental health, community relief, meals and scholarships (two to four annually). Proceeds from the show will benefit that scholarship program.

Participants include M & D Fashions, fashion boutique, plus live performances by Davida High and her dancers, Oski Da Profit, Cliff “Nugg” McGinnis, Mr.16 and T. Nash. Professional football player and Liberty-Eylau High School alum Tra Carson presents his Big Pressure clothing line.

DJ Sgt. B serves as deejay, while Derrick Keener serves as host.

“We will have some local businesses showcasing their products. We will have vendors,” Bell said, adding, “We have some hairstylists and barbers that will also be a part of the show, of course letting the public see their work and the

services they provide.”

The show puts a face to the name and allows people to get to know the stylists and barbers here, she said. It’s both a fundraiser and networking event.

Vendors include local clothing manufacturers and local boutiques.

“It’s mostly a networking show, basically, but we want to integrate hair and fashion because that’s the industry that I’m in and actually bring into the city because I’ve traveled to California, Georgia,” said Bell, who’s participated in shows and classes elsewhere.

There’s a lot Texarkana hasn’t experienced, she observes.

“Of course Texas is big on hair, but it’s a lot that we don’t see, and I would love love love to bring that to the city because we have so much talent here,” Bell said.

Masks are required and CDC guidelines will be enforced.
