Local schools avoid major infrastructure damage from storms
TEXARKANA — A few local schools experienced minor infrastructural issues due to weather last week, but nothing major enough to prevent school from resuming on Monday.
Texarkana Arkansas School District, Texarkana Independent School District, Pleasant Grove ISD and Liberty-Eylau ISD confirmed that academic schedules starting Monday should not be affected by any damage left from the recent winter storms.
PGISD reported no issues on Friday. L-EISD Director of Communications Matt Fry said they had no major issues, other than a sprinkler head freezing and leaking. But it was repaired before it caused any damage.
TISD Chief Communications Officer Tina Veal-Gooch reported a list of issues that should be fixed by Sunday.
“Given the number of campuses/departments for TISD, our maintenance team began preparing for the below freezing temperatures last week,” Veal-Gooch said Friday. “However, despite their best efforts, we, like many others in the area, have experienced some issues that are currently being addressed and will be fixed by Sunday in preparation for student and staff return on Monday.”
These issues included:
■ Hot water line broken at Texas High School and Wake Village Elementary
■ Drinking fountain line busted at Tiger Golf Center
■ Busted ice machine line at field house
■ A few water lines busted at concession stands at Tiger Stadium
■ Goree Academic Learning Center water line busted in the old boiler room.
TASD Director of PR Genia Bullock said the district has seen minimal issues.
“The weight of the snow compromised the structure of a couple of awnings, and a restoration company is working to address a water leak from a pipe that cracked at the high school,” she said. “Our team will continue to evaluate the situation as the snow and ice continues to melt.”
