Low COVID count continues for Texas schools in this area

- By Andrew Bell

For the second week in a row, only three Texas school districts reported new COVID cases in the latest reports from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Texarkana, Redwater and Atlanta Independent School Districts each reported one new case for the most recent reporting period of Feb. 22 through Feb. 28. TISD and Redwater reported one staff member, while Atlanta added one student case.

This brings TISD’s staff total since July 27 to 209, while Redwater sits at 22. It’s worth noting that TISD has more than five times the on-campus student population that Redwater has.

Atlanta now has 63 total student cases, and a total on-campus student positivity rate of about 3.5%.

With updated on-campus student population numbers (as of Jan. 29), Atlanta now holds the lowest positivity rate in Cass County.

Liberty-Eylau ISD and TISD were two districts who had increases in total cases from last week’s reports, without any new case data — likely due to late reporting.

L-EISD’s student total increased from 64 to 70, and the staff total went from 72 to 74. This would give them a student positivity rate of about 3.74%.

TISD’s student total raised by four, from 240 to 244. Their rate sits at approximately 4.24%.

Red Lick’s total student positivity rate decreased a couple of percentage points since last week due to updated on-campus populations, but they still sit at the top of all districts, with a rate of 7.4%. Simms remains the lowest, at 0.66%.

The Linden-Kildare district holds the highest rate in Cass, at just over 5.4%.

All new cases were reported with a source of infection of either off-campus or unknown.
