Jaguars sweep Eagles

TEXARKANA, Texas — There was a marathon of runs in the final game of the four-game series between the University of Houston-Victoria and Texarkana A&M-Texarkana on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles fell to the Jaguars in their Red River Athletic Conference contest in the second game of their doublehead­er, 16-14.

The Jags jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, scoring six runs on four hits before gaining two outs.

Levi Whitlock drove in a run, Hayden Leopold drive in two runs and Luis Vargas hit a 3-run home run before TAMU-T was able to get out of the inning.

Vargas finished the day 3 for 4 at the plate with a homer and 3 RBI for the Jaguars, while teammate Leopold went 1 for 4.

Whitlock went 1 for 6 with 3 RBI for UHV.

Angel Mauricio broke the Eagles’ hitting drought, slapping a single past the Jags’ shortstop and teammate Jack Skinner followed with an infield single for TAMU-T in the bottom of the third inning.

Mauricio finished 4 for 5, scoring three runs and adding an RBI for the Eagles in the contest.

James Turnball drove in Zach Lee for UHV, giving the Jaguars a seven-run cushion.

Turnball went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI for the Jags.

Hunter Reid put the Eagles on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth,

hitting a 2-run home run over the right-field wall, driving in Jaylan Prince from second, 7-2.

Reid went 2 for 5 with two homers and 5 RBI for the Eagles, while teammate Prince finished 1 for 4 with a double.

Reid also converted a double play after the Jags player hit a liner to him and he tagged the bag before the base runner could get back to third.

Cole Chambers cut into the UHV lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, tripling down the first-base line, driving in Mauricio for the Eagles.

Chambers went 1 for 3 with a triple and an RBI for TAMU-T.

Austin Aguirre added a RBI in the top of the sixth inning, extending the Jaguars lead to 8-3.

Wyatt Stanvinoha sliced the UHV lead, collecting 2 RBI on a triple over the center fielder’s head in the bottom of the sixth, 8-5.

Stanvinoha went 1 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBI.

UHV was able to scatter two more runs in the seventh on wild pitches, extending the visitors’ lead by six runs, 11-5.

Turnball added 2 RBI in the seventh for the Jags, pushing their lead to 13-5.

Reid smacked his second homer of the game in the seventh, driving in three to cut the UHV lead to 13-8.

Tyler Black scored for TAMU-T on an errant throw into the visitors’ dugout, 13-9.

Jack Skinner drove in Mauricio in the seventh, closing the Eagles’ deficit to 13-10.

Aguirre drove in Lee for UHV, making the score 14-10.

The Jags scattered two more runs before the end of the ninth, taking a 16-10 advantage into the bottom of the ninth.

Maurico and McGinty drove in a run each, while Skinner added 2 RBI for the Eagles, cutting the UHV lead to 16-14. The Jags held on for the two-game sweep.

The Eagles fell to the Jags in the first game of the doublehead­er, 6-4.
