‘Bucket List’ star shines at local DQ

- By Greg Bischof

TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas Bucket List storyteller Shane McAuliffe enjoyed meeting and greeting the show’s fans as he as stayed under some tent shade outside a local Dairy Queen in Wake Village on Thursday afternoon.

Being near a Dairy Queen restaurant helped spotlight a connection that Texas has had with the restaurant since the ice cream eatery’s founding in the late 1940s.

“Basically Dairy Queen found a kinship with Texas because the different Dairy Queen locations within Texas, started offering more then just ice cream and other dairy products,” McAuliffe said. “They started offering food Texans like — such and tacos and chicken fingers.”

The stop here was a planned, comeand-go promotional event.

McAuliffe has been with the Texas Bucket List TV show since its 2013 inception, He said this was his first time to visit the Dairy Queen location on U.S. Highway 67, but he felt like he could relate to it.

“It reminds me of the Dairy Queen I knew while growing up in Round Rock, Texas, starting at about age 4 around 1983,” he said. “This Dairy Queen has the same sort of large front area windows like the one in Round Rock and I’m glad we got to see it for our last tour of the summer.”

David Walker, a field operation’s manager with Dairy Queen, said this store opened in the early 1970s.

“This was the first Dairy Queen that served Chicken dumplings,” he said.

Texas Bucket List spotlights points and people of interest in the Lone Star State, including offbeat museums, restaurants, businesses and quirky, larger-than-life Texans. The half-hour program airs in 22 Texas media markets. Locally, it airs at 1:30 a.m. Mondays on KSLA Channel 12.
