Music in the Park starts, other live music abounds

Free monthly patriotic concerts scheduled

- By Aaron Brand

Historic Washington State Park will kick off its patriotic series of summer concerts this Saturday with a show by the Nighthawk Band.

HWSP’s Music in the Park series this year will have a “Proud to be an American” theme with free concerts monthly through August. Starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nighthawk Band will perform both classic and progressive country music, the state park says in a news release.

Band members hail from across the region and have been together in Nighthawk Band over 15 years. Also on tap for the summertime Saturday concerts at Historic Washington are the Arkansas National Guard 106th Army Band on July 17 and the 1859 Marine Band on Aug. 21.

The 106th Army Band performs across Arkansas for both community and military events with its military marching band, brass quintet, concert band, rock and jazz bands, a lounge band and smaller configurations, according to the musical outfit’s page on Facebook. Their slogan is “Service Through Music.”

With an emphasis on the American Brass Band Movement’s music dating from 1840 to 1880, the 1859 Marine Band

promotes the heritage of a military band from that era, although they are unaffiliated with the U.S. Marine Corps. The band sports reproductions of U.S. Marine Band uniforms worn in that era.

Historic Washington State Park’s Music in the Park concerts are held outside the 1874 Courthouse, which also houses the state park’s visitor center. The park encourages guests to bring blankets and lawn chairs for comfortable outdoor seating.

Patriotic tunes aren’t the only live music options coming up. Here are a few more to consider:

■ Billing themselves as “America’s Hardest Rockin’ Country Band,” Diamondback TX brings the music to Whiskey River Country for a Friday night show, kicking it off at 10 p.m. The quartet plays classic country, rock ‘n’ roll and dance music. Get the $15 tickets in advance via Prekindle.com/events/whiskey-river-country.

■ The Arrow Bar showcases its expanded patio Saturday night with a lineup of electronic dance music on tap: QwillA, RxEvil and Fuchsiallama with Synesthesist doing the lighting. It’s a 21-and-up show with a $5 cover for Patio Vibes, which starts at 9 p.m. and doors open at 8 p.m.

■ TEXAR Federal Credit Union presents a night of local music, brews and bites to eat on Thursday, June 24, with The Moss Brothers bringing the live tunes in front of the Perot Theatre, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It’s the first event with the new Texasside entertainment district in place. Local brewpubs Pecan Point and Redbone Magic Brewing provide the drinks and eats. There’s a nice price, too: free to see.

■ Next weekend has a sold out show with Buckcherry and Hinder at Crossties on Friday, June 25; Texas country legend Pat Green on Friday, June 25, at Hempstead Hall with tickets ranging from $20 general admission to $25 general admission reserved available via HempsteadHall.com (opening band South Down Main starts at 7 p.m.); Arnold Boy Entertainment presenting another Soul Session, this time the plaid edition with Nicky Parrish and J.
