TEXARKANA, Texas — A Texarkana, Texas, man was released from jail Thursday after posting $100,000 bail in connection with the shooting and injuring of a 24-year-old man, earlier that morning, at a residence on Cancun Street.

Kevin Melton Meredith Jr., 22, was released after posting bail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a statement released Friday by the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office.

Texarkana, Texas, Police responded to a dispatch call to speak to a shooting victim that had arrived at Widely Regional Medical Center just before 2 a.m. Thursday, according to police dispatch records. Police spoke to the victim, Kristoffer Michael Landers, who told them he had been shot on Cancun Street. As Texas-side police were questioning Landers, Bowie County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and took over the investigation because they had spoken earlier to Meredith, in front of a home at 112 Cancun St.

The Sheriff’s Office’s statement said that Meredith claimed that he shot at Landers out of fear for his own safety.

The Sheriff’s Office’s statement goes on to say that Meredith stated that Landers had come to 112 Cancun residence earlier (before 2 a.m.,) and was beating on the door and issuing threats to Meredith before Landers drove off.

Meredith then went on to claim that Landers returned later to bang on the door again, at which time he answered the door and confronted Landers with a firearm.

Meredith then told sheriff’s deputies that Landers went to his truck to reach for something inside the vehicle, while standing halfway in and out of the vehicle.

Meredith went on to say that the circumstance led him to fire one shot at Landers, but he added that he wasn’t sure whether the shot had actually hit him.

The preliminary investigation by law officers revealed that Meredith’s girlfriend had been romantically involved with Landers and that the relationship led to the confrontation between the men.

As for the victim, the Sheriff’s Office’s statement said Landers had been shot through the left arm and the bullet subsequently entered his left torso. Officials say he is “expected to recover from his injures.”
