Appetite grows for local goods at farmers markets

-

Texarkana has two farmers’ markets, one in Arkansas and one in Texas, offering in-season fresh and healthy food, growing information and more.

Both farmer’ markets have special events and demonstrations through the season. They are worth checking out for a variety of food and ideas.

Gateway Farmers Market, located at the intersection of East Ninth Street and Jefferson Avenue in Texarkana, Arkansas, is open 7 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from May to the end of the season.

If the vendors did not raise it or make it, they area not allowed to sell the items at the market.

At the market, farmers sell fresh produce grown within a 75-mile radius of Texarkana as well as plants, fresh eggs and fresh flowers.

Home produced goods and crafts are also for sale, including soaps, honey, jellies, fried pies, cookies, bread, brittle, cakes, pies and and much more.

USDA meat is also available. The Texarkana Texas Farmers’ Market, located at 305 Texas Blvd, also promotes healthy, locally grown food.

You’ll find information about the market, growers and vendors, as well as tips about cooking, growing and processing market produce online.

The Texas-side market is open May to July and has a once-a-month evening market from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Texas market also hosts fall markets, a Christmas market and other special events.

Check both markets’ Facebook pages for additional information and events.
