City’s art scene is thriving with eclectic mix of galleries

Texarkana Art Scene

1894 Gallery—105 Olive St. 870330-5003. Housed in the 1894 City Market, which was formerly the Ritchie Grocery Building, the gallery includes an eclectic array of works by local and area artists inside a historic space that’s been reimagined and remodeled. Local artists like Danny Helms, Judy Wright Walter, Mary Jane Orr, Carol Flori, and Bill Garrison are included. In addition to paintings, the gallery work includes art glass, jewelry, woodwork, pottery and sculpture. The 1894 Gallery is also used as an event space and art classes are held there. Local gallery Arts on Broad merged with this gallery.

The Art Station and Gallery—523 E. 3rd St. 903-293-0650. Gallery, art classes, art spaces for rent, painting sessions and other events.

Christophe­r’s Framing Accessorie­s Gallery—4053 Summerhill Square. 903-280-7008. The main business emphasis is framing, but Christophe­r’s also features local artists with pottery, acrylics, oils, mixed-media, photograph­y and more. Artists include Dean Lynn, Jeannie Knod Edwards, Gary Bachers, Diann Roy, Paul Whitt, Judy Wright Walter, Judy Jones, Ronnie Sladovnik, Darla Clement, Chris Thomas, Denise Bolster, Amber Fenix, David Bond and Bob Nasits.

J Brown for the Home—121 College Drive. 903-793-4114. J Brown for the Home specialize­s in interior decor and fancy home furnishing­s, but you’ll find plenty of art here. Much of the art consists of oil paintings, and there’s realistic, abstract and impression­ist art with a variety of subjects and sizes. There’s vintage art from local artists like Dean Lynn and art that shop owner Jeff Brown found at estate sales and elsewhere. There’s also photograph­y, sculpture and antique prints.

Joel Wright Art Gallery—125 College Drive. 903-293-3727. Unique gallery that doubles as an appointmen­t-only tattoo shop, this space features the art of tattoo artist Joel Wright and his wife Sarah Wright, as well as other local artists. Art here includes paintings, sculptures, jewelry and more. Joel specialize­s in a watercolor tattoo style that is reflected in his visual art, too. His paintings are described as expressive surrealism in oil, plus acrylic works that combine black-and-white and earth tones.

John F. Moss Library at Texas A&M University-Texarkana—7101 University Ave. 903-223-3000. A&MTexarkana’s library is one of the newest galleries in town, providing a clean, well-lit space for exhibition­s of local and regional artists. The Four States Regional Art Club has shown member work here, as have university staff and students. Artists featured in recent exhibits include Eileen Stearman, Terri deNatale, Betty Miller and Paulla Lewis.

Joseph Raymond Fine Art—214 E. Broad St. 903-280-5878. Joseph Raymond’s art has been featured in local exhibition­s and his work is showcased at his own downtown gallery. Raymond has large, abstract pieces and smaller works to see, as well as woodwork by Jon Welborn and “spiritiles” by Houston Llew. Style, color, texture and techniques all vary in Raymond’s work.

Regional Arts Center—321 W. Fourth St. 903-792-8681. The RAC hosts a year-round visual arts program that features both local/regional and national touring exhibits in the secure galleries and hall galleries. The Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council also organizes juried exhibition­s for student artists and adult artists. The basement includes the ArtsSmart gallery, while the For Arts’ Sake Gift Shop includes art and art-related products like prints, books, games and gifts. Outdoors, the RAC has public art like the ArtSpark and ArtWall.

Silvermoon on Broad —217 W. Broad St. 903-792-0562. This multi-functional downtown event space with several renovated storefront buildings all connected also features the occasional art show in its entrance gallery and lobby space. There’s also a hall, parlor, theater and courtyard.

Skyler’s Frame Shop—1302 N. State Line Ave. 870-774-5352. This local frame shop formerly known as Stanhope’s has a longtime history of featuring local artwork. The shop has also served as a home for art classes.

Turner’s Framing, Gifts & Gallery—310 Arkansas Blvd. 870772-9312. Another framing and gift store, this business also makes room for local artwork, such as original paintings and prints from Tyler Arnold and work by graphite and charcoal pencil artist Cedric Watson. Also on sale are other art prints of popular, non-local artists, along with custom framing, collegiate-themed products and Texarkana souvenirs.
